Hood Idea?
Hood Idea?
So i saw some hood ideas and thought about mocking up some stuff its just a hood(i cropped it off a picture off a 3rd gen it looks like crap i know)

the one in the front would rase closest to the edge maybe 1-2in up and the bigger one(yes i know off balance) would raise 2-3in on the long edge closer to the window..(might put that closer to the window or make it a bit shorter but keep the width i dont know yet) i would have some sort of body color seals, maybe make the whole thing carbon fiber to reduce weight due to added weight of the things to raise hood...
i know people here have thought of it hence where i got the idea to mock it up.. but i would work on it if i could and if i had a 3rd gen hood... anyone want to help by granting me a free or cheap hood?

pretty much yeah, but it will be powered so when car is parked etc your hood isnt open nothing can get in, i mean you'd be able to leave it up but you have the ablity to close it and if i do it right be flush with the rest and look damn near stock..
well seeing as how i dont know exactly how much hood clearance is needed i havent thought to much on what exactly to use to get it up and down...i'm sure i could use one thing(i cant remember the name of it for the life of me!) and make some sort of bar system with small(yet strong) bars of some sort...
keep in mind, me myself just starting thinking about this after seeing other people say something... i dont have a 3rd gen nor any gen for that matter, but i am sure something like this would do alot better in the rx7 community than the saturn one eh?

i think the problem you're going to find with getting support for this is that the FD is already a very complicated car. a lot of us do as much as we can to simplify things. take a look at the vacuum line diagram, for example. also, FD's get very hot under the hood. so whatever motor you use to open/close the vents will have to have a good tolerance to heat. plus you'll have to find a way to keep the vents from breaking off at high speeds when they're open.
if i were taking on a project like this, i'd find a way to open/close "rain guards" for pre-existing vented hoods. a number of vented hoods come with plates that can be slid open or closed to keep rain from getting into the engine bay. if you were to add an automated system like that, one that could be controlled with a button or switch from inside the car, i think you might get a bit more interest.

yeah, i'm sure that would be better off but i want to take the straight stock hood, mess with that see what i can do.. i might put the motor off to the "coolest" part of the hood and have a little system of "bars" to open both the inlet and outlet... again i need a hood(as long as its not severly broken it can look like crap(paintwise) and it has to be a 3rd gen....
then i will happily take it and see what i can do..
hopefully someone can help me out with a hood in ohio that'd be great(that person would get first dibs to run it and see what works and doesnt etc.. all with an un mounted switch(just wires and a swtich to put in the door jam etc you know.... anyways thanks for all your assistance telum01..

you could use a hydraulic lifter. that seems like the eaiest way to me..
you could run the tubeing all the way to the storage bins
In the muscle car days chevy and dodge both had automated scoops. Chevy just had a open close cowl duct. I think the dodge air grabber would be your best model to follow. I believe the scoops were vacume opperated I dont know for sure.

There really wouldn't be any point to the front scoop, because you'd be creating pressure in the engine bay behind the radiator and IC that would decrease their efficiency. Your proposed large vent behind would be fine in that case, since it would help create more negative pressure in the engine bay and help the radiator and IC airflow.
However, you'll definitely have to brace the underside of the new vent (and the construction of the linkage to raise the vent needs to be stout, adding weight), otherwise it will flex and vibrate excessively at speed. Anyone who's watched their hood flex above 80 mph will understand what I'm talking about.

like Kento said, the inlet would allow air to pressurize (from being forced into the vent at speed) behind the radiator and intercooler. the high pressure area would make it more difficult for air to pass through the radiator and intercooler so they wouldn't be able to cool the coolant or air charge, which requires air to pass by them. however, a rear-facing vent would allow air to escape from the engine bay, essentially having the opposite effect of the front-facing inlet.
