HKS AFR? sufficient enough?
hey guys...im thinking about getting an intake and ss midpipe....so ill be intake, dp, mp, and cb...would an hks afr be sufficient.?? i know petit ecu or a pfc is the way to go but would an hks afr do the trick...it has readings of up to 50% too lean or 50% too rich....it also looks nice and fancy to your interior and is only 250bux...but if it sux then ill pass and save for a petit ecu...any suggestions? With a mp it will be hard to keep it at 10psi. My suggestion would be buy the intake, buy a used Pettit ecu, then go midpipe. I tried the SAFC and had trouble. I haven't heard anything about the HKS but I know you don't take the cheap way out on these cars.

The HKS AFR does work, but it's technologically about 5 years behind the curve. The Super-AFC and Super-AFC II are FAR superior units for not much more money.
The Super-AFC and its bretheren work best on a lightly modded FD (like intake and cat-back, that's it) to fine-tune the AF ratio for more power at or near stock boost levels.
They also work really well with a Petit ECU or the like to fine-tune the fuel for best response, power, and safety.
By itself, I don't think it will work well when running more boost than stock (over 11.5 - 12psi). The factory ECU just doesn't do well with changes in volumetric efficiency, and trying to add in more fuel may just run you into fuel cut instead.
