Unhappy high water temps..

Hi i just bought myself a 1994 R2 from Japan.

When i drive on the highway my temp will lay around 75celsius to 90 cels. But when i get in traffic it will raise up to 110 easy and dont show any signs to it will dropp The only mods on the car is exhaust and open filter. And my car got an unstable idle too goes up and down from 1500-1800 rpm "i think the idling is my spark plugs". Any one know what todo?

Sorry my shitty english

110* C is very bad. you should not drive the car around in traffic until you can get the cooling worked out.

110*C is in the area where a water seal could break at any time.

i know

I just drove it to my bro... so we can change the plugs and see if its stable :/
do i have to change the intercooler? Or is it something that is making this car so hot? Becouse it boost really good and works fine except the high unstable idle when im standing still.

It sounds like your cooling system is working as long as you're getting air through the radiator. I'm concluding this because temps are right around the thermostat opening temps (around 83degC plus or minus). Check to make sure your fans are coming on at the correct temperatures or, for that matter, coming on at all. Fans should come on at 100degC normally or 94degC with electrical load.

I doubt very much that your idle problem is the spark plugs. There are many causes for this symptom. I would start by closing down the air bypass screw on the throttle body, then slowly opening it (counter clock-wise) and see if this helps.

ill try to do that. But one of the spark plugs got some "wtf is the word on english again" copper rust? And that is making in idleling at high rpm "1500-1800" and making it reach high level of temp? Ill try to change the plug and change the coolant water too. 50/50 mix right? And with water wetter?

Try driving with the A/C button on. It should turn the fans on.

My fans hardley ever go off. But then again I like "spirited driving"

Yep, 50/50 is fine and water wetter is nice if you have it. Just use distilled water.

If I were you I would change the thermostat and check all the radiator ducting. You should have an 'undertray' panel that runs from the front bumper to the front axle - some people remove them and that is a huge mistake. Check your fan relays (they are the four rectangular (2cm x 2cm boxes) near the passenger-side headlight. I also suggest replacing the thermoswitch with one from a 2nd generation RX-7, which will cause the fans to activate at a slightly lower temp.

Based on what you said about your symptoms, I would start with the fan relays.

I have an all-stock cooling system, except for the 2nd gen thermoswitch. My water temps vary between 180F-210F (90-100C) at all times, except when I do something to stop the airflow.

the fans comes on at over 100 celsius. But when i turn of the car it stops, i think maby its connected to my turbotimer or some thing. Ill check the relays and change my coolant water.

I dont know a shitt what have been done to this car in Japan. I gonna check every part in winter and see what have been done with it.

The car is allmost new, 24000km. No clunkes or what so. Every thing is perfekt exept the ideling and temp. It starts fine and runs strong.

thanks for the suggestions guys! ill try to check my car at thuesday

Couple thing what was the temp out side?

I use to run like 106C on the stock setup in slow moving traffic when it was 35C., like 20 minute to go 3 miles.

1. Upgrade the radiator

2. At 30F outside I never saw over 95C so you might also want to check out the water pump.

2.

Do the cooling fan mod which allows you to put a switch in your car to turn the fans on and off at will. I will turn my fans on in slow heavy traffic just to keep the engine cooler. When you switch the fans on they come on at medium speed, pushing the a/c button gives you high speed cooling fan.

Is the thermoswitch same as the coolent temp sender, or is it the one below it? With my bad coolent temp sender, my car runs between (160- 165C) on the highway and maybe up to (170) on traffic. I am beginning to think it is running way too cool. Anyone think it is due to a bad coolent temp sender? I also have my fan wired on @ all time. Any pros and cons input? I rather the car to run a little cool in my opinion, but that may explain why I have poor gas miledge.

165 C is something like 330 deg. F.

today i changed my sparkplugs and oil "ngk7's and 9's "redline 5w30 synthetic".... My idle became perfect and my boost became stable at 0.6bar "jumped up to 0.8bar before" ! 100% Stable at 1000rpm with clutch in and 850 rpm with ac on and light. But still temp problem i got up to 110c easy. So my next thing todo is to change the coolant liquid and thermostat "summer thermostat". Ill add some pictures of my nice plug =D

Those plugs definitely needed to be changed, it's no wonder your idle improved. If the plugs are any indication of the former owner's care, flushing the cooling system is a good idea. Don't forget to drain the engine block and check obvious things too, like making sure the front of the radiator is clean

Picture isn't in good focus, but looks to me like the electrode is worn/rounded. And at first I though that was just grease on the outside of the insulator, but it really looks like rust. It would bother me if water had been sitting inside the boot. Just looked again and the insulator almost looks chipped too.

the dark spots are oil, some how he has spilled some oil from the filler neck. The car is in really good condition "22000 km" but have some small faults. Ive checked the car around botton and all the bushes and "rubber" are like new. Seems like the last owner has fucked around with the turbotimer, the fans dosent goes on fast enough "it goes on 110c sometimes". I gonna go 50/50 with the coolant/water and some water wetter too. I ordered myself a PowerFc from rx7store.com last night too so i can monitor my system better. ill keep this thread updated

i changed my thermostat and coolant yesterday, the thermostat was abit slow and my coolant was abit thin. Now i get 75c on highways "nice driving", 85 if i drive hard "still highway". In traffic "standing still" at max 105c, city driving 93c.

So the plug, thermostat, coolant, oil change made my temp dropp bigtime! Feels much better to drive now.

Heres a shot of it leaving the garage
yeah i know its dirty plenty greasy fingermarks all over the car
