High idle?

When I start my FD and the engine is cold, the idle starts out at about 2k rpm then procedes to steadily climb to around 3k rpm and beyond. I'm new to owning an RX-7 and I know the engine will idle a bit higher due to it being cold but I don't think it's supposed to go THAT high. If I give the gas pedal a slight tap the idle calms down to a little above 2k rpm where it gradually settles down as the engine warms up. Has anyone else had experience with this? I seached the forums a bit but couldn't find a similar situation.

Well its going to idle about 3k when it starts to warm the cats, that is common. If you jab the throttle once it should fall.

Search the fourms for "AWS" or "Accelerated warm-up system" It's part of the emissions system. You can defeat the AWS by starting the car in first gear.

With a manual transmission, if you cold start with the clutch pedal in and the shifter in gear, the idle will still be high, but it won't be as high as it would be if the shifter is in neutral.

Either way, it should drop down when you tap the gas pedal.

Yes, it is working properly. It was designed this was to quickly heat up your pre-cat. This supposedly makes the car burn cleaner, more quickly.

I don't want my engine revving to 3000 rpm when it is stone cold, so I ALWAYS start the car in gear.
