Hey Everyone

I have been reading this forum for a while. And I am a member over at NoPistons but it is getting kinda boring. Well Im 17 and will be a freshman in college this comming fall. It seems that I have 20 thousand comming to me for a car. Would I be able to get and maintain a FD with that much. Yes I know all about their lovely apex seals, ingeniously setup vacuum hoses, and super efficient turbo setup. Ha. Well anyways I want this car as a project for next summer (parents say no car on campus 1st year) and I will have all summer to do all of the reliability mods myself and get it running good. Would it be better to buy a RX-7 with a blown motor for about 9k and send it off to KDR, or just get one that is running. Oh yea and I have money of my own set aside already for the "oh ****" fund.

Honestly, with 20K you should get (If you really want a FD) a nice one with a popped motor. maybe 8-9K. Send it off for a nice new motor, reliability mods and a few power-ups. That's what I'd do!

That way, you'll know exactly what you are getting. You may also be able to get a warranty, depending on where you go for your motor.

I'd also recommend that you go to a single shop for the rebuild and the installation. That way if there is something wrong with the motor, you can hold someone responsible to make things right.

Engine builders warranty their motors, but not the labor to R & R them if something is wrong with the rebuild.

Yea the third gen rx-7 is the only car that fully makes all of my "requirements". Fast, Handle EXTREMELY well, Semi reliable, and good looking. I first thought about the supra, but after Scrutiny I decided that for 1 its to expensive, 2 its to heavy for my liking. If I wanted fast and ok handling I would get a camaro (my dad has a SS 2002).

An ss isn't even in the same category as the FD. It's like apples to oranges

Category maybe not... But the FD and the SS are suprisingly similar in performance. Cars have come quite a long way in 10 years. A modded FD is a car to beat... But stock, they aren't on top like they used to be.

Yea i agree a stock FD isn't much to drive, I was just comparing build quality, technology, ect. There are alot of modded z28 in Tucson. The fastest all motor one is 12.0@112. I ran a 12.2@113 on stock boost and just exhaust, intake,PFC. The z28 is a good starter car.

I didn't say they were not in the same price category. They are not in the same car category. If you want an ss more power to you

That would be my course of action with $20k

Here's my shopping list
Car $9000
Rebuild with street port $4000
Full exhuast and intake (mp or high flow) $1500
Power FC $1300
FMIC $1500
High flow fuel pump and 1300cc secondaries, $440
BNR stage 3's $2200

That puts you at $19940. Maybe ditch the turbo upgrade for now, go with a cheaper ECU and get whatever else you want.
