First, read the stickies and FAQ's at the top of this forum. Then do a compression test to see what shape the motor's in. Go from there to decide if it's a good idea, based on the condition of the engine, to increase performance.

I am not trying to be a hard-a**, but you WILL NOT KNOW whether it is in good enough shape to start engine performance modding without a compression check. Many FD engines are on their last legs before this (84K miles), but many last much longer.
Now, if you are talking about reliability mods (DP, AST, new coolant hoses, new fluids, new fuel filter, etc.) and mild performance stuff (air intake, catback exhaust), you will probably be OK. Anything more, and YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT THE ENGINE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION before stressing it more.
In addition, there is a lot of suspension stuff that may need to be replaced (pillow *****, bushings, etc.) due to age and wear.
Please read and research more before you break the engine or other stuff (and your wallet)!
