Personally, if you want an FD, I suggest you buy one with a rebuilt motor. The FD isn't really an expensive car, mine only cost $11,500, it's much better than paying $17,000 or more for a common Civic Si and such. Just make sure you do all the schedule maintenence early and often.

You mean if his PARENTS can afford the $4000 a year or not.

He should tell his parents how fast an FD is......

When I was 16, I wanted a slow car to help me build my driving skills. I guess this isn't the case, anymore?

Just because you can afford to make the monthly payments doesn't mean you can afford the car. You have to factor in gas, insurance, and maintenance.
not to mention speeding tickets.

Welcome to forum, and it sounds like you have done your homework. Congrads on discovering the anti-rice rotary. To give you a better idea on the cost of insurance you also need to know that population density and affluency also affect your insurance rate quite a bit. Knowing that you are 16, clean record (you're only 16, you better have a clean traffic record) and are considering a sports car (assuming a 3rd gen RX-7) your yearly insurance cost is going to be between $2500 and $4000. You can get a more accurate estimate if you factor in pop. density and local affluency. If you live in a densly populated and very wealthy community, then expect your yearly bill to around the $4K mark. If you live in a sparsely populated, middle class area (with a low crime rate), then you get off somewhere around $2500.
If you have a 3.0 or better GPA, then you should also get a "good student discount" from your insurance company which whacks off 10% your bill .

Don't feel bad about being young and owning a rex, but please, PLEASE drive her gingerly. Watch out for that 4500rpm boost spike that can brake you loose in a turn. Whenever possible, don't drive it in wet conditions and especially don't drive it in snow. I wish you would get 2 years of driving experience under your belt before you own one as well, but I don't know you. I feel that I would still have my FD if I had owned it since I was 16, but I'm also the kind of person who puts the cover on the car if I know it's going to be raining or sitting parked for more than a few hours. I also don't take up drag challenges at the light. I hear them rev their engine and let them peel out in grandma's beat up Honda while I casually coast onward to my destination knowing that I shouldn't even waste my gas shaming that peon.

One last thing: WTF is a sleeper? Is that a fast car that looks like a regular beater?

Speaking on behalf of my past, I say go for it bud. I am considerably young myself, (24yrs) and know that an FD isn't the smartest way to go right now. But you know what I gotta say to that? **** it! Live large kid.

Everyone,

Please let us not forget that we should wake with smiles for we are blessed with life, health and among many other beautiful things, the most overlooked, choice.

Well, an FD isn't going to be much of a sleeper, even if you don't know what it is, it looks fast. I think a great sleeper is a 1G Eclipse GSX, especially if you live in an area with marginal roads. As far as insurance, no matter what you get, a great trick is to put one of your parents as the primary driver on your car and put yourself as the primary driver on some beater car.

That works great until you crash and insurance goes insanely high.

first mistake: you stated how old you are . a lot of people in here do NOT like hearing about 15/16 year olds getting FDs. weather its because they are jelous they did not get the car at that age, or they think all people this age are F&F dreaming ricers....i dunno. but some people always will get their panties in a bunch over this subject.

you are the only person in the world that knows if you are responsible and mature enough to be able to control a car like this. you are the only one that knows if you are an irresponsible driver or not, asking or bringing it up on a public forum will not change that. i have said it before and i will say it again...fast cars do not kill people. immaturity kills people.

as, for insurance prices....you could have called any insurance company and asked. rates are different for different drivers of different ages living in different areas. once again...no use in asking in a public forum.

if your parents are paying for everything, go ahead and get the car if you like it. just make sure you do your homework. if your parents are not gonna help you financially, you will have a tough time paying for everything.

If you really do know what your talking about and can pay for the car (insurance, gas, and maintence) then make sure you look long and hard to find one. Don't just jump on the first good deal you see. IF an RX7 is being sold for a cheap price, well then you get what you payed for. By the way, how much do you expect to pay for the car?

Drunk or just bad drivers can kill you, too. This is where the raw performance and acute handling of the RX-7 can actually save your ***.

To learn and develop driving skills in a FD is not a wise thing to do. In fact any rear wheel driver cars with turbo is not a good learner's car. High power cars requires skills and good judgement from the driver.
I know too many people wrecking their cars not just FDs. I would suggest you get a 1st gen miata (stick shift), drive it, learn in it, keep it realtively stock. Try autoX and lapping with the miata and when you are ready (having some 3~4years with the miata) then you can think about stepping up to a FD.
This is what I would have done if I have the money to get a miata and learn, but I don't so I learn in my 93 accord EXR for 4 years and 1 year in a civic before I search for my FD.
Rearwheel drive turbo cars or any high horse power cars mixed with inexperence driver can be leathal, meaning your parents might have one less son. I know too many people got killed in their first car, some I know, some I heard. Some aren't even in high HP cars.
I will let you do the thinking.
Good luck.

thanx

hey thanx a lot for the tips and stuff about rx7. The problem is that if i get a diff. car now i won't be able to get another car until like college. And i dunno what kind of condition the rx7's are going to be in at that time. but from hearing ur stories u have successfully scared me away from getting a rex. but i will get a rex one day. thanx for all your help. thanx for ALL THOSE PPL WHO HELPED ME!!! but i think i'll get a 4th gen civic, fmax turbo, and engine internals adn i'll be good for 5 years and get a rex. Thanx! one more question, y does the reliability for the eclipse suk so much, and y does the motor suk so much too??? thanx l8r
