Hi everyone.
i just took it out on the road for a test of the rebuild and she went well... really well. problem is, i still have smoke coming from the passenger side of the engine bay... around the area of the turbos/exhaust manifolds. i have checked all the bolts and they are all torqued up... i have no idea where this could be coming from!

help! this is the only thing standing between me and a brand new rebuild engine in my FD

 

BUMP:
another thing on this... my water temp gauge (aftermarket) is reading below 50 degrees in the cockpit, but the water in the filler neck is boiling... how is that possible? reversed thermostat (is that possible)?

 

The leak on the passenger side is likely coming from one of the turbo coolant hoses.

 

sweet! FSM should show me where those sucker lie! i'll go check!
anything else it could be?

 

ok, opened it up... sure enough there were no clips on one of the turbo coolant lines... clipped up now... should solve it right?

 

Barring a continuing leak, you should expect moderate smoke from the turbos and exhaust for about 30, maybe 45 minutes after starting a fresh rebuild. Penetrant, oil, coolant, and general grease from your hands and other parts tends to get all over turbos, manifolds, heat shields, and pipes, and has to be burned off slowly as the parts heat up. Usually after a road trip or 2, the smoke is all but totally gone. IF it continues, then you may actually have a leak. You'll probably need it up on a rack to see it well.
