Talking Help with a New FD

OK,

I an new here so lets not get the torches out just yettt....

I am in the process of acuring a 93 auto FD, it needs some lovin in the engine. My bro had a 84 '7 but sold it I fell in love with that car!! So i decided to take a lookie around and i found a 93 auto FD 7 for 3500 dollars.... he says the body is in mint and it runs.. but it shuts off in like 5-10 secs.

My 2 Questinons are:

1: Is that a good deal??

2: what do you guys think that the problem is?

I did some searching on this site and i came up with it either being:

Bad Engine
leaky injectors
fuel filter

or just the fule system in whole!!

He also said that the mazda dealership said that the compression was good.

He is seling because his dad died, doesn't want to deal with the car anymore (has to ship it out to get it fixed, noone local to him), and just wants the money!!

Thanks for any help!!!!

If you can be sure the compression is good, and the interior and exterior are actually good, it's a steal. It would have to be pretty trashed to be worth less than $3500. How much of a steal depends on many things - it might be $100 fix or $10000.

I would fly out there myself and inspect it, and buy in cash at that price, and so would many other members here. But it takes some experience to recognize the open issues with the car.

well what i was figuring is IF i have to replace all of the wiring and get a rebuild at rotaryresurection.com it is still worth every penny!!

As far as what it is doing what do you think is wrong?

Impossible to tell without doing some basic tests. Could be fuel injection, bad wiring, really bad coolant seals, dead starter/battery/electrical, whatever. Maybe it's just flooded and the plugs are fouled. Without some idea of troubleshooting, it's all a wild *** guess. Hopefully it hasn't been sitting too long.

I personally would budget anywhere from free to $5000 to get it going again. And another 3k to make it a manual.

Can you do your own work?

I have done plenty of engine work on hondas but my freinds dad works on rotary airplane engines and he is in the process of rebuilding a 84 7. it has been sitting for 2 years... hopefully thats not too long!!!

SO i do believe that with whatever expirence that i have, i will be able to do my own work, With a shop manual...

Not to worried about the manual swap though

Then it's a steal if it's in the condition they say it's in.

Unfortunately, if the interior and exterior look a little beaten, it's likely everything on the car is ready to fall apart. So even if you get it to run well, it could be a long-term money hole. But at $3500 I'd buy it, fix it, and try to flip it if I didn't feel like keeping it. The trouble is, nobody ever offers to sell me broken 7s for cheap

Dgeesaman gave you good advice. What more do you want to hear?

Personally, I'd also want to know if it's ever been in an accident. Did it pass smog ? Is it currently registered? Was it ever modified?

Get some photos of the engine bay and interior, and we might be able to give you some more advice.

Don't buy an auto unless you know someone who can convert it. They have all kinds of problems plus run like crap.

If the body/interior is in good condition, I would buy it fast (before its offered elsewhere and someone takes it). If you bought it and turned around and sold it, you could probably get at least 6k from someone looking to rebuild or swap a ls1 into it.

If mazda said that it has good compression, its unlikely to be a bad engine. Fuel system is a possibility, ignition system is also a possibility (ignition coil, wires, and plugs).

You may want to pull codes (search for that) and see what comes up. You should also check your TPS if it comes up when you pull the codes. I believe its labeled as throttle position sensor - narrow and wide. The tps could cause the car to start up, idle for a bit, then die if its far enough out of range.

What is the mileage? You can expect to replace a majority of the sensors, belts, plugs, and hoses if it hasn't already been done.

Don't buy an auto unless you know someone who can convert it. They have all kinds of problems plus run like crap.
The same can be said for any FD actually.... Its the same thing as a manual, except with an automatic transmission. Manual transmission have problem with gear grinding and syncros. Autos are not quite as fast, and usually don't have problems unless you start pushing a lot of power and drag the car.

If its an auto tranny and you put it in neutral it should be able to be dragged. I don't see why not.. im not really a heavy 3rd gen guy yet as I don't have one but to my understanding theres nothing special about the auto tranny from any other auto tranny. I have not read anything to say otherwise, only things I have read about towing the FD is just like any other low sports car... you hit bumps while its trailoring with front wheels on a dolly it will probbably scrape in the back... so you might be careful or try and find a full size trailor for it...

IMO its not a good idea to do this. It would be better to tow it. If you have AAA, you can say it broke down on the road or whatever. It may be alright, but could possibly F*ck up your transmission. If you put the car on rollers (like the towing company does), it would be ok. Also, you should never tow the car backwards by the tow hook in back. The tow hook in front under the bumper should not be used for towing. It is used to tie down the car, and never to drag.

well, 3 months later i post on my topic...

The body= MINT
the interior= near mint, the leather seats have some cracking but no tears and they are well hydrated

Engine= guy was lying a bit, did get it to run for 2-5 secs and it was white smoke from here to CA, but clean

I did try to pull codes but was never able to get any codes from it!!! i did notice that under the drivers wheel well there were some bare wires.... found out that that was the main harness. Took the dender down and riped apart the harness and seperated the bare wires.... but nothing still....

Questions,

Is the ECU bad??? and I need to replace the wiring harness. but cant find anywhere to buy it!!!!!

i am going to start working on it christmas vacation!

The ECU being bad is very unlikely. For a wiring harness you'd probably have to go used. Try and ask Fritz Flynn on this forum.

I think someone had a used front harness for sale recently in the buy/sell forum. Definitely get it and replace it.

Forget the harness and the engine The car is trash!! Hook up a shipping comany and send it to 89704. Take the $4,000 bucks I'm giving you with the cost of shipping, And thank me later for saving you from much heartache. Dan

BTW: Good find!
