Help a girl out...w/Auto Shift **** replacement

Let me start by saying I know you can do this, but I need to know how before I buy everything and take the car apart... (also before you gentlemen start I am not swapping to a manual) and yes I searched already for like an hour...

I need to also know how to take the stock shifter off.

I want to put an aftermarket **** on it. I have a pic of an auto FD with a Sparco shifter in it.

Thanks for the help.

Well......this is news to me. I don't know how you'll incorporate the hold feature switch (front top button on the shifter) nor the shift-interlock (rear top button on the shifter)?

Page K-27 of the shop manual. There are 2 screws on the shifter, on the side closest to the radio. There is also a wire going up into it for the hold button - I think that has to be pulled through as well.

Any aftermarket auto tranny **** will probably not have a Hold button on it, BTW.

You could probably use this shift **** that has an overdrive button that can most likely be used for the hold feature button. The size and shape of it though looks to be the similar to the stock **** if that is a concern.

Thanks for the info on how to take apart Dale. I don't need the hold button since it does not work because I have a PFC installed on the car.

AUM thanks for the pic, too bad it is not too attractive looking....

I am looking to put a MOMO auto **** on it. My shift plate needs to be replaced badly and I have an extra boot off of a '96 so I think I will just use that one. I may need to cut the handle about 2" from what I have read.

I wish I could get the AT RX-8 **** to work but it does not have a button to unlock it like the RX-7. I was hoping someone knew how to do it without needing the button to shift it....?

Is the unlock button electronic or mechanical on the ****? if it's mechanical you'd need to find a way to hold whatever unlocks it in the open position.

Ie. friends auto civic had a metal stick that wne right up the middle of the shift lever. if you pushed it down it unlocked to change gear selection. we just glued it pushed down.

down fall is you gotta be careful b/c it will give you the ability to accidentaly knock the shifter into N or if it hard enough R. etc. if you take the **** off and snap a pix i can try to help you figure something out.

Los.

Thumbs up

Finally....Just thought I'd update this topic I posted in case someone searches and wants to know how it turned out.

I was able to replace the ebrake with this MOMO pit stop handle. (Quite a bit a work since the MOMO is a straight handle and my 93FD had a slight contour.) I love the look but should have gone with another handle.

As for the Auto shift ****. I love my new one! I have to re-iterate I do not use my hold button since I am running a PFC and it doesn't work anyways. What i found out was the **** I got is the same size as the shifter so I had to dremel the inside to slide it down. I only secured it to the top hole because I was afraid it would be too low if I went down to the second, but I may change it later.

Now I am just looking for a shift boot plate since I have a RHD one from a '96 that I have no use for.

Because I can.... j/k Thanks for the compliment!

I find it is mainly 7 owners that hate on the auto's and some reasons are valid...but not it the Supra world. Actually almost all of the cars both my boyfriend and I have owned are auto's...in his stang did 8.52@168mph in the qtr mi. We have 5 cars right now all Auto's and all turbos!

As for the Supra it is a 10sec. car. And the 7 I don't know yet. It hasn't been to the track or dyno yet with the mods I did, but that is okay cause I don't mind just lookin cute in it!

Razo makes a realy nice carbon fiber shifter for the auto. I don't like Momo's since those little set screws get loose from vibration.

That is why it is good a use a bit of loc-tite on it. It shouldn't come loose once you use that on it. Also, I went with the MOMO cause the material seems to match my otherwise stock interior well.

I don't know what you are refering to but I don't have a silver interior? The **** is black leather with chrome button and 2 chrome rings is all. The rx8 is nice too but many folks already have it. As far as for the automatic it does not have a button to change the gears. So that is a no go for me, I don't think it is too smart to weld it in the down position.

I think he's/she's referring to the very first pic you posted showing the Sparco auto shifter.
