Exclamation HELP FROM FELLOW RECARO RZ or SPIRIT R SEAT OWNERS!!

THIS IS NOT A "I WANT TO BUY" OR "POST PICS PLEASE" THREAD. Please only post pertaining to the question at hand:

For all you who currently own Recaro RZ or Spirit R seats for the FD, do any of you have the stock rails for the seats that include the tilt function (shown in the first pic below as the little tab in the middle at the bottom of the seat)?

The reason I'm calling on guys out isn't for brag rights or what not...it's because it's damn near impossible to get replacement rails for these seats (JT and Chuck have tried...). Mazda doesn't list these as one part, so someone's gotta spend HOURS looking through a parts diagram (in Japanese) to get all the various parts for it. Recaro Japan is impossible to get ahold of, and all of our (there are a couple of us) attempts to obtain these rails from them have failed.

Point being, would any one of you who has the rails be so kind as to let us grab them for a week or so to get them copied (we'll have to fabricate new rails)? We'd be most appreciative.

I have my rep to put on the line, so no I'm not gonna run away w/ your rails. In fact, you can see my excellent forum feedback here: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=256057 and if that's not enough, I'm willing to put up some $$ as a security deposit to ensure you get your rails back in a timely fashion, exactly how you sent 'em.

Much much thanks
~Ramy

I have a question on the seats.

What do they weigh? Does Recaro sell the seats that are the same or materially similar to the Spirit R seats?

I'd love to find a pair.

Jeff, they're really not worth the cost IMO, if you're just looking for seats. They're only worth it if you're specifically looking for THESE seats (ie getting something super rare, and paying the hefty price for it)

Recaro doesn't make these seats (they're OEM only), but they make a seat almost exactly like it

Recaro Pole Position

If you have the seats, or can get ahold of them, why not just fabricate them from scratch?! The time that it would take to find someone, have them ship them and then fabricate them, you'd have them done if you just started now.

Alex,

A few reasons:

1) Fabricator isn't local. I'm not sending him my seats

2) Fabricator would need my car to get the holes right for the FD floor. I'm not sending my car either

3) Replacement rails that work are available (Brides) but they're heavy as HELL and don't have the tilt feature. I'm sure it would be VERY difficult (if not impossible) to modify existing rails to include the tilt feature w/o having them sitting in front of you to see how they are. Basically having the template to copy from should make it cake. That, and if we could get EXACT replicas, that would be MONEY.

~Ramy

EDIT: Jeff, I forgot to answer your question. The seats weigh about 10.5 seats (between 10 and 11 lbs according to my kitchen scale LOL). That's because the back is made of CF kevlar. I'm petty sure the Pole Position seat above is NOT made of CF kevlar tho (that is a good part of the price...very strong, very light)

You can always make a template of both the seat, and the mounting holes in the car. Just have to figure out the tilting feature although that shouldn't be to hard. If you'd like, you can send me a drawing of the mouting holes on the seat and I can see if I can get something made up for you at my shop. Figuring out the the tilting feature shouldn't be that hard at all.

Alex,

I just found out that other individuals may possibly be already in the process of fabbing rails for these seats, so I'm gonna stick w/ that and hopefully that'll work out. If not, I'll take you up on your offer. Thanks

Pat, I actually asked Mitch about this before, and he told me that he's made custom rails before, but he uses Sparco rails for the FD and modifies them as necessary. I can deal w/ that, but he said the reclining option wasn't possible. Dunno if he just doesn't wanna put in the effort or it's too hard or what not, but bottom line is he said no. For me, that's a HUGE issue, because these seats don't recline, and I'm a pretty big guy. I need my space. On the stock seats, I have my seat pushed back to the 2nd to last spot on the rail, and the back reclined two or three clicks before it's touching the bins. In short, I need that seat to tilt back as much as possible for me to be comfortable.

Also, Mitch is expensive. He quoted me something like $250 - $300 for the first rail, then prob $180ish - $200 for the second (because then they know exactly what needs to be done, since both seats are identical). For $500, I can prob manage to get the OEM rails...

FDNewbie, if i remember correctly, the pole positions dont fit in the FD because they have too wide a base, either that or too wide of shoulder bolsters. But the SPG's do fit, however they are still tight though. Those are the closest seats to the Spirit R seats recaro makes for the FD.

Here are some pics of and SPG in Cossies car with the rails attached. I'm not sure, but i think he might have gotten the japanese rails.

Rotary Extreme sells these seats. They come in either Fiber reinforced plastic or carbon kevlar.

Hopes the pics can help answer any questions.

ROTORhead93, yea I have no idea about fitment, obviously you know better than I do. I was just referring to shape of the seat...those are the closest. And I'm aware Chuck sells the SPGs. I had JT and Chuck trying to get the rails for me for MONTHS, and it just wasn't happening.

I'm really surprised JT couldn't get the rails for you. I've heard the only place you can get them instead of buying them from someone used, is going to Recaro Japan. And since JT is conveniently located in Japan, you think it would be easy for him.

Anyways, good luck on the search, and if you find the rails, be sure to post the link to where you bought them from. I would definetly pick up a set for myself. I want some SPG's.

Well Jason did find them initially from Mazda, but I'm not quite sure what happened...he quoted me a price (you don't wanna know...really lol) then said he was gonna contact Mazda to see if he could get the parts together for a bit cheaper. Next thing I know, it's a no-go. I have no idea what happened...

Thanks. Like I said, it seems some guys are already working on this, so hopefully if this prove fruitful, I'll post and see if we can find out how many copies we need.

Thanks

BUMP! Yet another Japanese connection fell thru, and we still don't have any OEM rails to work w/. If anyone would be so kind as to let the good # of people that need this use the rails for a very short period of time, I'd be most indebted.

I dunno if Van or anyone else who's actually in Japan would mind trying to get them from Mazda or Recaro??

I'm not giving up so easily. I'll give him $50 just to go to the local Mazda stealership, spend 30 min w/ one of the parts managers looking up the various part #s (it's not sold as one peice), get 'em all down, order it, and send to me. How's that for motivation?

so can you actually use a full harness with these seats or are the holes just for show?? i dont see any plastic grommets so the seatbelts would most likely destroy the fabric. also i notice the stock seatbelt clips on there... i guess these are just meant to but used w/ the standard 3 pt. belts?? anyone using a full race harness out? if so can you post pics? id be interested to see a pic of someone strapped in, in the FD -heath

Heath,

As you can see from the pic below, the seats actually do have cutouts on the side for racing harnesses. The only prob is, the cutouts are in the CF backing, but not in the seat covers themselves. I guess it's good that way cuz I'd never want to have to cut through CF/kevlar.

I didn't give it much thought that there are no plastic grommets around the top holes (maybe there are and I just don't remember...haven't used the seats in so long) but if there aren't, I'm sure some can be placed on them. I'm a lil crazy (ie I payed for these seats, so I'm gonna use 'em damnit lol) and I'll prob make precision cuts in the fabric and use plastic grommets on the side to allow for my harnesses from the side as well. I haven't concluded whether I'm going to make a cut & slit through the middle of the seat itself to allow for a 5th harness (crotch belt) or just go w/ a 6-point harness setup. The determining factor will be what effect putting the slit through the seat can have on the structural integrity of the seat, given the stress the harness will place on it. I can't risk the seat fragmenting in the case of an impact due to the severe stress put on the slit I made. So in short, we'll see, but I'm definitely intent on using these along w/ a roll bar for a 5 or 6 point harness system (I already have a 5-point in the FD now).

As for a pic of someone strapped in, in the FD lol...didja notice this thread is about trying to be ABLE to put the seats IN the FD? lol. I can't use 'em cuz I got no rails!!! And apexkw's rails are falling apart... So first things first.

lol ramy.... yea the seats do have a plastic ring around the shoulder strap holes... but only on the back side. also ramy i dont think mine has those holse on the sides for the side straps. i'll check laterwhen i go home since i sit in mine everytime i drive the car lol...just teasing man. my rails are usdm touring rails made to fit with the rz seat. and in my opinion they suck. they work fine for street driving i guess but i want the oem ones because i plan to track my car. and i feel that they will have a better fit then my current setup. also i think i found someone to get me a new set of rails again but it will cost some $$$ ... sigh
