HELP ASAP!! I need a value for a 94 Base MB RX7 with R-Title and 62K Bone Stock

I need some quick advice. I just found a 1994 Montego Blue Base Model RX7 5-Speed. It has an R-Title due to a front end hit. It has been repaired, the air bags were not blown. The car has 62,000 original miles and no modifications. I have been told it is in excellent condition otherwise, but will go to see it tomorrow.

I need to know what YOU would pay for this car, given that it was within 1 hour drive from you. If anyone definitely knows values of R-Title cars also, please let me know. I have been told from 10%-50% OFF the standard value for the same shape car.

Now keep in mind a few things. MB is the color I wanted, so assume it is the color you want in a base model. I do like the gadgets like sunroof and rear wiper that this one does not have. It has a black suede interior. The other thing is the motor at 62K bone stock is a problem in my mind. No boost guage was installed and my current car has 69K with a blown motor.

My current RX7 is a 1993 Automatic with a Blown Motor. Being an automatic, I have had a difficult time locating a correct motor at a reasonable price.

Please reply with what you think it is worth or what you would consider a reasonable deal.

Thanks for the help,
Tim

I doubt that it is worth that much due to the salvage title. Why would you have problems finding a motor for your automatic? It is the same motor as the 5-sp. Malloy Mazda in MD will hook you up for $1950 with a new motor. Now if you don't want an auto then I understand. Cars with salvage titles can be hard to sell...

Hey rotary tt can you explain how the mazda reman works?

-you dont have to have a good core right?

-is it 1950 plus you have to pay shipping of your motor to them and shipping of their motor to you?

-do they definetaly have new rotor housings? I know in some cases you can get a totally new motor.

Tim if I were you I would NOT buy that car at all. Who wants a rebuilt title. That's no good because it's hard to sell after and nobody wants that kind of car if they can afford a good 7. Plus you need a sunroof if you like it. I wouldn't EVER own a rx-7 without the sunroof. Plus this one probably will need a motor in the next couple of years at least. I would say the car is worth 11,500 because of the accident.

Tim McC I PMed you about getting a motor for your other car.

If it was repaired correctly and the body has no major damage like no dings or scratches then i would say 15%-35% off of what a good car would go for. Remember though if you buy that car then its your responsiblity to sell it if you need to get rid of it and its got a salvage title so you might have a tough time explaining that to a future potential buyer.

Actually, I am finding that most people do not know the motors are definitely different. The rear housing is different. All the rest of the engine is identical though. Yes the bolt patterns are the same and the tranny will mount up, but the starter in an automatic bolts to the side of the motor, not through the transmission. With no provisions for the starter on the 5 speed motor, there is no way to start the car.

An Automatic Motor can bolt up and be used with a 5 speed transmission and either starter can be used depending on the starter wiring harness.

My car will also need a new engine wire harness (a few hundred) as well as some other items. I have contemplated a Malloy reman since I am within driving distance, but then I have to also add about $300+ for gaskets and the harness, and I am back up into about $2700-3000.

Adding this up, it would be better for me to try and find a J-Spec motor with a good wire harness to install.

Thanks for the information everyone.

I have seen average asking price for a 94 is around $17K with a clean title (mostly touring models). The problem is that I have used several of the car value websites and am only coming up with $10-12K with a clean title. The actual market is not reflecting the true value of the car.

Any other opinions, information??

Tim

R-title cars value REALLY depends on what was wrong and how well it was repaired.

A FD hit in front, even relatively lightly can be totaled easily due to parts cost. Fixing the car correctly isn't the hard part, it is finding all the parts used at reasonable prices.

If it is fixed really well I'd say the TOP DOLLAR would be $14-15K. If it isn't fixed well then I'd say the bottom dollar can go as low as $5-6K (if it all needs to be re-done).

Tim - For your comparison, I bought my '94 FD Montego Blue Touring all stock, w/55k miles on orig motor for $15k a year ago. It has clean title. It now has 66k miles and I'm very happy with it.

tim, i would pay no more than half of blue book value! salvage title cars are a pain in the *** if nothing was done right, even the paperwork. if you do buy it ask the seller if they still have all the receipts for the parts and repairs or an accident report or paperwork for intial inspection after the repairs were made. also have the suspension and chassis inspected by a qualified shop!

hey if the cars been fixed right by all means go for it. If i were you i would get a compression test on the car to make sure its got good compression. i've seen rotary engines last anywhere between 50-130k.
if you have plans to resell the car soon then i would reconsider or make sure the car is in top notch condition.
