Heat under the hood??!!!!
Everytime I drive for more than 20 min, it gets quite hot under the hood. The temp gauge doesn't indicate any excessive heat, but even the rod that holds the hood open gets really hot. I've read some members talking about some components glowing red, well.......my car doesn't do that, but I'm a little concerned.
Is this because of my stock radiator?
Btw, I do not have any mod, and the heat comes from left of the manifold where the intake connects to the engine.
Help?!!
Thanks,
Jason

it is perfectly normal for high temps, its a rota.
The area youre talking about is where the Turbos are so this will be hotter than other areas.
You say you drive for 20mins? drive for longer and see what its like.

most of us have replaced the pre-cat with a downpipe to help reduce underhood temps. it could be that your pre-cat might be clogged and getting very hot.
do a search on pre*cat or "underhood temps". lots of threads on that. or have it looked at by a *rotary specialist* (not the dealer or your corner mechanic!) to get a professional opinion.

You may want to think about is a aftermarket vented hood. They have been proven to drop underhood temps pretty damn good. I recall one guy saying his water temps run 10 degrees cooler since installing vented hood ( i dont recall if it was degrees F or C though). An upgraded radiator isnt such a bad idea either. Oh yeah, and definately get the precat out of there and replace with a downpipe.

replacing a clogged precat with a downpipe should reduce the temp of the leg area of your cabin too. Very good for summer driving, when the heat is intolerable.

I actually have a fan rigged up on the wall in front of where I park my car so that way after a day of cruising I can park it pop the hood and cool everything down. It really helps so that everything isnt heat soaked when you go to drive it again.

I found that removing the blank plastic cover behind the lower front right (looking forward) hole, the one which would be an air intake for the second oil cooler on an R2 model, reduces underhood temperature somewhat. We are probably not supposed to do that, but it does seem to help.

I was told by another RX-7 owner in my area that removing the power-steering and AC helped lower underhood temps by a large chunk of change. I imagine just keeping the engine bay as uncongested as possible would lower temps all the way around (and a vented hood would be a big bonus).
Easier said than done, to be sure.

i normally pop my hood and let the engine fans run for a while when i park at home. hell after a hard run i will do it anywhere. my girl gets mad at me sometimes because i sit in the car and watch the temp when i park.
