have you ever had a solenoid go bad?
I know a lot of people have boost problem but as it ever occured that it was a solenoid that was bad?
I am asking because i have done a lot of hose jobs and never seen a solenoid go bad other than a broken nipple. I had problems with unhooked vaccum hoses, check valve, etc.
But never a solenoid that went bad. Are they pretty reliable? Anyone had a problem with one of these?
thanks a lot

Personally, I haven't had one go bad.....yet.
But I know someone that did a couple of years ago. He was having a hell of a time controlling boost. I did a pressure test on the wastegate solenoid and sure enough it was leaking pressure. The diaphram inside must have taken a poop.
Usually, if a solenoid goes bad it will just get stuck in one position causing the CEL to come on, but when it still works but it leaks pressure, that can be a pain to diagnose considering we have so many underneath this big ugly nest....

Never had problem with broken solenoid nipples but when I bought my FD, it would boost 10-7-8. After a few months of messing with the vacuum lines and reading boost related threads here on the Forum, I decided to cross the electrical connections of the Pre-Control/Wastegate Solenoid. PRESTO. immediate 10-8-10 boost pattern.

I have had the fuel regulator solenoid, and the turbo control (pressure side) solenoid go bad on me. I replaced the TC solenoid twice (the first replacement went bad too).
Here's the thing: many times the solenoid works perfectly well when it is cold, but after it heats up, the internals don't work correctly anymore. Therefore, when you test the solenoid, it is most likely cold, and it will "seem" like it is working correctly. However, after the car gets warmed up, it may not work like it is supposed to. This is what happened to all three of my bad solenoids.
The best way to test them is by heating them up (use an oven, or a pot of boiling water). Testing them while they are hot will give you more accurate results.
