Has primary turbo oil seal gone?

Hi there,

I've got myself an FD which is a bit smokey on start up. I have searched and have read some other posts, but as ever, they don't seem to exactly cover the symptoms I see.

I know its my first post, but I'd just like to ask for some advice:

Basically when the car fires up, it puffs out a thick blue cloud of oil smoke. Literally a cloud, and it clears from the exhaust in a matter of seconds. It starts after a couple of turns, and after the smoke, it runs perfectly - no further visible smoke, either on idle or full throttle. When looking at the air box (std one), I find alot of oil in there, and the culprit is the pipe venting the boost pressure from the primary turbo side. I have looked at the pipe from the secondary side - it is completely clean and dry. I have also looked at the breather pipe from the oil filler neck - again, completely dry.

I am making the assumption that an oil seal in the prinary turbo has gone (or is leaking).

Any other thoughts what could be putting oil into the primary turbo side?

If it is an oil seal in the turbo, are the twins servicable - is it an easy job or best left to the professionals?

The FD is std throughout, by the way.

Any opinions would be appreciated,

Cheers!

Turbo seals are a very possible culprit, given the symptoms. Might want to look into getting a good used set of twins - that's the easiest way to fix the problem. The turbos are rebuildable also, BTW.

A pro would be required to rebuild the turbo itself, but pulling the twins isn't that bad of a job.

ya know this smoke on startup is Normal. A small amount of oil in the chambers is better when you think about it. id rather have oil in the chamberwhen it starts then wait a sec or two for it to start.

I did some hose work and found that there are 2 vaccum lines that run to the oil injectors. If they are not connected then there will be no smoke on startup ( the few seconds). My car used to smoke like this but stopped for months. After i found the hoses off i replaced them and now i have my blue smoke on startup for 5 secs.

Hi there

Thanks for the replies.

TpCpLaYa - I appreciate the comment about the small amount of smoke on startup. What I have is actually different - a very thick cloud, not the thin cloud usually associated with ignition. What I suspect is happening, is the inlet pipes get coated during use and when the car is sat off, the oil accumulates/puddles somewhere so when it cranks it draws some of this into the combustion chambers, so when it does ignite I get a considerable amount of oil burnt off.

Just wanted to see whether there were any other issues that could cause the primary turbo to leak oil into the inlet rather than an oil seal which is on its way out?

Cheers!
