Has anyone tried the fan switch mod?

Has anyone tried the fan mod as described on this page?

http://rx7.voodoobox.net/howto/fanswitch/fanswitch.html

I did it to my '94 fd and it works great!
The only thing is that when I flip the switch to turn on the fans it drops my engine 100 rpms as if I kicked on the AC and when I turn off my car my fans always stay on now for a few minutes.

I am wondering if I am causing a confusion in my stock ecu.

Should I take the switch off?

no, you'd be the first....of course, most guys are doing it

you are not confusing your computer, the alternator is experiencing a load from the electrical system, it's normal

The fan mod is one of the FIRST things most of us do....well, after installing a downpipe of course.

It's a very important mod, don't take it off, especialy in the summer, you'll notice a big difference if you have an aftermarket water temp. gauge.
I did it last spring and it works great, like 93BlackFD said, it loads the altenator that's the reason the rpm drops a bit, nothing to worry, you are safe!

Is there any way to make it so you don't have to turn a switch on and off? So you just turn off your car and a fan stays on for 10 minutes....

If you have a turbo timer you can. Just let it do the normal 30 sec then put the key in the on position and set the turbo timer for however long you want the fans to stay on.

One great thing about pulling out the entire A/C system and throwing it in the corner of your garage is the A/C button now functions as a double medium/medium speed fan switch. I use it all the time when I know I'm hitting stop and go.

You can pop out the A/C relay and have the same button function without ripping out the A/C also.

That's how I use my A/C button...but still have the compressor in, just doesn't come on anymore...I think it's frozen or something.

Likely due to fan timer relay/ecu that was installed on most fd's .... basis for standard fan mod. voodoo is the alternate approach.

Could try turning off switch about 2-3 minutes before arrival/shutdown, to stop fans from running on.

What's the point of keeping the A/C system *in* the car if you're not going to ever use the system?

If you track only on occasion. My car is a daily driver and I have the Miata thermoswitch but when I track in the Texas summers I sometimes I pull the a/c relay so I can make the fans run 100% of the time without actually running the compressor. Only takes 2 mins to pull the a/c relay and you can put it back in when you are done.

The reason your fans are staying on after shutdown is because your car has already had the fan wiring update done, and when you wire up the voodoobox fan mod for medium speed, the relay triggers the thermoswitch which automatically runs the "10 minute shutdown sequence", meaning your fans will run for 10 minutes after you shut off the engine.

You can run the fans on low speed with the fan wiring update without triggering the 10-minute sequence, but the only way to run the fans on medium speed with the fan wiring update is to have two of the relays already energized before you ground the third relay. PM FDjunkie, I think he figured out the pattern. Hope this helps.
