Guage cluster removal without wheel removal

Ok, i'll admit, i'm a ***** and don't want to mess with the shotgun shell in the steering wheel, but i need to get at my guage cluster this weekend to see what is wrong with my tach.

Is it possible/easy to remove the guage cluster without removing the steering wheel as per the FSM?

you dont need to remove the steering wheel. Just remove the steering column pieces, and youll have enough room to pull straight back on the dash and wiggle it out. Remove all screws first though.

Yep, it's not that bad. You have to remove quite a bit of trim pieces to remove the instrument cluster - take your time and make sure you've got all the screws out.

The whole cluster does pull straight back towards you. On the '93's, you have to pull like HELL to get it to pop free. It's FAR easier on the '94s.

Just take your time with it. I can pull mine in about 5 minutes or so - it's not that bad once you learn where all the pieces and parts are.

When i was using the "search" button to try and find the answer to my question, i came accross alot of threads that suggested there is a '99 cluster -- i found a picture of it, and it's fantastic. Being in Canada, the km/hr would be alot handier than getting a US mph cluster.

Was there any conclusive resolution on wheter or not the jdm cluster is plug and play (excluding the boost for oil pressure swap)?

Hmm, mine didn't seem that bad. Didn't take that much effort to free it, mostly maneuvering to get at the gauge/light plugs. Must be one of the lucky ones.
