gotham racing's short shifter

I'm looking for feedback about the short shifter that Gotham racing offers. I would like to get a short shifter but have limited info. I was told to stay away from
"C's short shifter " but that the Mazdaspeed and the shifter from Mazdatrix were both good choices. I've felt the B&M shifter and if felt stiff and notchy. It made the tranny feel new, but I don't know if the stiffness is what one wants- is it? . Gotham racing says it's a copy of the B&M, and the price is very reasonable. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Thanks Mahjik, I read that thread. It was pretty informative. I'm trying to find input specifically on the Gotham shifter.

I believe the B&M is about 1/3 (33%). The RX-7 Store Short Shift Kit is either similiar or the same as the Pettit Short Shifter which says 50%. However, it feels a much shorter than just 50% (more like 66%).

Also, if I purchase the gotham shifter, does it come with everything I need?

Hey Mahjik, do you have one, if so which one? There is a big difference between 33 and 50% throw, as well as the difference in price. I wonder if it's worth the extra $100+ for the rx7 store shifter??

I have the RX-7 Store Shifter. It's short, real short. To be honest, I would probably prefer something around 33% than the shortness of what I have now.

Don't get me wrong, if you want a really short throw, it's a damn good product. However, it was a little shorter than what I was looking for but not enough that I'm going to change it back out.

Another stupid question, the gotham and B&M shifter look different than the rx7, mazdaspeed shifters. I do not see the shaft extending past the machined base. Are they in fact two different kind of shifters, or are the lower shafts just not visible in the gotham/B&M pictures?

I got the B/M b/c of the issue of moving the shifter faster than the synchronizers can synchronize the gears between shifts. I felt that the Mazdaspeed shift reduction was way too high for long term reliability. The B/M was just right although alot of tranny noise come thru the housing.

I just changed out a C's shifter with a Gotham one. Throw is about the same. The C's was installed wrong and has some evident scaring on it. (I still have it if someone wants to but it)

The Gotham shifter is just great. Although it is a little stiff.

what are the dissadvantages of the shifter being too short?? I can understand that perhaps the throws are so short that it causes a problem with the syncros. The only other thing I can think of is with it being so short, you may " forget" what gear you are in. I know it sounds stupid, but sometimes if I'm not in the usualy rpm range ( too low or too high) when I go to shift, I realize that I was not in the gear I thought I was. Maybe it's just me....

I never thought about the issue with the throw length/ syncros... good point.

Hey cpa7man, with all the talk about the B&M's noise factor, and the fact that the gotham shifter is a replica of the B&M, do you find your gotham to be noisy???

I'm talking about personal preference. The amount of reduction by the kit I used was not exactly what I was looking for... As I said, it's a great product, it just depends on what you are looking to have for your car.

No increase in noise noticed.

My FD is very quiet. So I would notice it. My rear end has no whine, bushings are all perfect. THe only noise I have is a slight squeak out of the sunroof going up driveways or big bumps. I can't figure that one out.

Ok... I bought the Gotham one. Which also looks a helluva lot like the one on ebay for $99. It is well made and install replaces the whole shifter assembly. initially the shifter was making some noise on idle and off throttle driving. It was also rather notchy and hard to get used to. Then after 300 miles or so, everything smoothed out. Noise is down 90% and much much smoother. I'd agree that the shift is down about 33% and sometimes think a little more would be cool. But wouldn't want to deal with any more notchy of a shifter nor spend $250.

would you say that the shifter has helped in the 2-3 shift, or made it more difficult??

overkill - I'd say that it is slightly better. Not a huge difference, you still have to semi-conciously get it into third vs. say a bmw, but since you are used to the stock you will likely get it into 3rd before releasing the clutch with the shorter throw. -- if you know what I mean.
