CA got the 94 Fd, now smog =[

Hey Guys, dispite all your input, I couldn't wait to bought that white 94 FD for 8600. I had JER (Japanese Engine Repair in Westminster, CA) check out the car before I bought it, he said the engine is fine, just minor issues /w body and paint.

The car is Non sequential setup, precat gone, don't know if the main cat is still there (how do I find out?) , roughly around 95k miles, it has a blitz exhaust on it.

Will the exhaust prevents me from passing smog?
I will replace oil pan gasket and spark splug to ngk BUR8EQP .

Thanks for all your input, pics will be posted soon.

Try searching the 3rd Gen section here, there are plenty of people who have passed California emissions test with stock or nearly-stock setups.

If the engine, vacuum lines, stock ECU, air pump, and OEM main cat converter are in good shape the car should pass without trouble as long as the cat converter is at normal operating temperature. Fresh oil and spark plugs should be helpful also.

Well...you already didn't listen to advice once. Now you want advice again? Hope this purchase doesn't come back to haunt you or cost you significant $. Good luck.

so the blitz nur catback exhaust shouldn't be a problem? cuz the inside of that thing is like a black hole.
Gringo, I want advice before to see if it was worth the price, and yes it was worth it. Thanks for your input.

Like Scotty 305 mentioned, try searching instead of just asking questions...

A little research on your part will go a long way towards making you a more knowledgeable owner.

Good luck and welcome to the FD (Financial Disaster) world.

I don’t get why people make threads and then completely disregard people’s opinions. WFT is the point then

Remember a car that can't pass smog= no registration= can't drive the car.
Guess you didn’t push for the guy to smog the car for you. Great move… Now you have this issue waiving over your heard. At best you are out 80 bucks and your time to get this done. At worst you could be out thousands…

Disinformation is your worst enemy. Spend some time researching and learning about these cars. They are not for those who take them lightly. They are complex, old, & expensive. They are also tons of fun when you tackle them properly.
That was very good advice, seems like you took none of it. As much as you love the car you just bought, it could EASILY turn to hate if you bought someone else’s problem. The FD is an intricate machine that if not taken cared of properly, will drain your bank account real quick.

I’ve never heard of JER. Are they intimately familiar with rotaries or FD’s for that matte? Just because they say they have the capability to work on them doesn’t mean they are experts. Did you see multiple Rx-s on their lot? BTW FD’s are best left to be looked at rotary specialists.

How do they know that the engine is fine? Did they do a compression test? What where the numbers on the rotor faces? Why is the car only boosting 7 psi?

Edit- You live in close proximity to the LA area so there is no reason for you not to take it to a rotary specialists in the future as there are plenty of them there.

Off the top of my head:

Rotary Power
Rotary Reliability and Racing
Neptune Speed
Tripoint
Lucky 7
RnR Rotary

Spend 2 minutes in the internet and look up what a cat looks like. Next you walk over to your FD and look under the car and see.

To be quite honest you really need to research (on your own) about the car you just bought. Your wallet and your patience will certainly appreciate it

Thanks Montego, I really appreciated all your advice. I got the smog issue out of the way today.
JER work more supra and rb26 engine, and all others. As a noob to rotary, got refer to JER by a friend, who knows the JER owner has an RX7 Fd, he is also currently building a cosmo 20B to put in a classic rx7 chassis. However, he charge me $100 just to look at my car and check for body damages, listen to the engine, test drive it. No he did not do a compression test. Thank you again, and I will called up the shop you mention above, because there is something wrong /w the cooling system on the car right now. Will post new thread regarding the cooling problem in the FD section.
