If it does that when you're not driving hard I'm going to say too much fuel. Do you get backfires? How are you tuned? If the tuning is refined well then maybe you have a leaky injector.

So your running a street port with down pipe, mid pipe a high flow cat on a stock ECU ? Not sure how you install a mid pipe and a high flow cat but I'm interested in that configuration.

ok so too much fuel and my downpipe is red hot???? maybe im missing something here but wouldnt less fuel make the pipe glow not more? but either way if i were to change out my injectors that should solve the prob? one more thing i have a piggyback ECU but havent put it on if i put that on will that help? as far as the comment about the high flow cat in a mid pipe its simple you plasma cut the pipe then TIG weld the cat in.

Running lean increases combustion temps, which makes the exhaust really hot.

But too much fuel results in afterburn within the exhaust and that can make the exhaust really hot too. The combustion chamber might not be that hot but your downpipe is.

What can I say? Its Canada and its freezing. I had my car parked since november for the winter. It had no problems when I parked it. I never started it until yesterday since it was a nice day out. We were battleing -50 degrees celcius on some days but average in the -20's. But anyways I had my car running for about 8 minutes in -5 degrees weather. Engine temp and everything was normal. But I looked under the hood my aftermarket downpipe was glowing orange. Also part of the block infront of the downpipe was glowing. I inmediately shut the car down. What would be the problem or is it normal? The only thing I did to the car before I parked it was sprayed engine fogging oil in the intake and fuel stablizer. Let me know. Thanks in advance.

It is not abnormal for these parts to glow. It's probably a cheap thin metal version, hence it glows.I would assume you are talking about the exhaust manifold when you say "block in front of the downpipe".These things glow when driven hard, but if it was properly heat shielded you would not see it.Also lack of airflow will result in exhaust parts being hotter than normal.

Im glad to hear that its a normal for rx7 to have glowing pipes. I dont know if its the block but right in front of the downpipe is part that is also glowing. Maybe it is the exhaust manifold.

The only time my downpipe glew red was when I did some work on the car and only put in about 1/2 the required coolant (I was only starting it for a couple of minutes). Anyway for some reason this caused the car to run extremly rich and backfire like crazy ans as mentioned the downpipe was glowing red. Filled the coolant level and everything went back to normal.

All I did was buy a midpipe and welded in a highflow 3" cat that had the inlet for an airpump and hooked everything up. Nothing complicated at all.

So then you have a high flow cat, just because you weld the pieces together doesn't make it a mid pipe. They are different, one is straight through, the other has a cat. I can't imagine it being cheaper buying a mid pipe and a high flow cat to make something that's already available.

I would maybe also think about timing! I know fd's timing is preset but what if they got the crank angle sensors on the front pulley around the wrong way or something.
I used to have a 2nd gen and upon starting after repaint we found the timing or someting to do with the ignition was causing the mainfold and turbo to glow bright red.

I wouldnt expect the manifolds or down pipes to glow on idle, seems a bit odd.

??? An exhaust midpipe is the portion that goes between the downpipe and the catback. It doesnt matter if it has a cat or not. Just like a downpipe is a downpipe whether or not it has a cat on it. I know that many call the midpipe with the cat already welded in a highflow cat for the RX-7 but in reality only the cat is the highflow cat. The entire peice is a midpipe with a cat. It was about half the price for me to do it this way over buying a midpipe with a cat already in it.

Helping not flaming

Wow does somebody want to help him and not flame him, isn't that the point of the forum?
Anyways, I'm no pro, but my pre-cat was clogged and glowing orange when I blew my first motor, I would suggest checking that before starting it and taking that risk. Hope it helps.
