getting skittish about dyno tune friday..any suggestions and words of wisdom????
my dyno tune is friday....
I will have just finished breaking in the motor as it goes on the dyno....Im very much interested in NOT blowing my motor during the tune. XS engineering is doing the work.
have any of you popped your motors doing the dyno stuff?
what are the things I need to be cautious of (i have my own opinions but I want to be sure I am right)
any input on this matter is greatly appreciated.
thanks
jason
ps...I did see a thread about running the power fc and 1300cc injectors and possibly there being a connection there that led to blown motors but there was not enuff info there to do anything but scare the pants off me.
my mods are on my sig....

are you running 15 psi on stock IC??
i dont see upgraded IC in your sig thats why i ask
i wouldnt recommend more than 13-14 psi though it. i personally am still stuck with the stock IC and dont run more than 12....when it gets really cold itll hit 13...
hot intake temps are no good....

Artguy I need you to do the right thing...Your car is fixed up just the way I want my R1 to be modified. Blown engine my azz you have ceramic seals, ported engine and new ball bearing turbos. You're not just doing this for yourself there's hundreds of us waiting to hear the results. Now damn it man pull yourself together we need to do this and now!!!
XS does great work but they will make you sign a waiver.....
They tune awsome but it really depends what you want. If you want decent power for the street then tell them to run it rich....if you want every ounce of power you can get out of your set up the go for it....but if the car pops don't blame them.
Dyno tuning is always a risk but its the best way to tune.
I don't suggest being around...it's not a pretty sound hearing your car on the dyno ahahahahah

BTW: anyone else interested in d/ling the two part video of about 18 FB, FC, FD's dyno'ing at a recent regional dyno here is the URL.
rwhp ranged from 117 - 408 on the FB - FD's.
Hi and low bandwidth versions available!

thanks guys...
yeah..the boost is down right now til I get another intercooler...I should have the greddy stock mount on at the time of the dyno....
I will go on that dyno...no prob there....I just do not want to have that engine go on me as it is brand new at the moment...my car days will be done if that happens again...my girl will simply burn it with all her fire! heeheh I will have detonation inside my house too.
If any of you have any insight...input etc on what to watch for or what to ask for...let me know....
the advice so far is appreciated...thanks

If the motor is fresh then everything will be fine.....problems always occur when people slap on single turbos and such on a motor that has high mileage on it and want super dupper rwhp.
Ill let ya all know how the turbos boost and work out....Ill post the dyno sheet first thing friday or early saturday when its done.
Todd: no boosting...Im a good boy.
Thursday I will be tuning it to the best of my abilities and will not give her a good pounding until then. will let ya know how she goes with the m2 set. right now Im still being very careful with my rather heavy foot.
I cant wait til friday night!!!! Im gonna gas her up and hit the streets (dyno gremlins willing). Im going Corvette hunting.

Some of the FDs blowing motors are because of the timing maps on the Power FC are too high at around 6500 rpms and above. Make sure they looks at that and tune for it. Since they have the software, I'm sure they will. Good luck with your dyno run. Hope the M2s work for you and don't blow oil like the last few sets you've had

Not sure but just in case
I remember from one of the posts some one mentioned filling up with race gas beforehand. I was reluctant to post this since it's heresay but then someone else that actually knows can reply.
Just in case the Texaco in Orange before the circle on Chapman sells race gas, which is probably a 1/2hr from XS in FUllerton.

Why tune on race gas if that isn't what you are going to run on a day-to-day basis?
If you tune for 104 O and run 94 O daily I'm guessing that is probably not the safest route.
Now if you go the other way, tuning with 94 O, then running 104 O at the strip or for a max HP dyno pull, that should be safe.
Someone correct me if I am wrong!

I understand the precaution with the race gas but normally you wouldn't be drivign like that so it would be a waste of money. Some people do dyno with race gas to get the highest dyno results they can....but what happens later when the fill on regular gas and floor it on the street? *POP*
I just had Dave at KDR tune my seven. I ran 107 unleaded and he believes its what saved my engine. We had an issue with my fuel pump crapping out and the car when way lean. 15 something on the wide band, I think. he said he has seen motors pop at less than that and it was probably the gas that saved me. My car is not street driven so it doesn't matter.
My advise don't get greedy, Pick a psi to run and stick with it. Don't think well .. just 2 more pounds... and I could have XXX HP.
Dyno video's of my car:
Dyno run ?
Final run (the money shot)

That was an awesome sounding run. Was this the run on 8 psi? I can't wait to have my car dyno tuned. Have you pu the power down @15psi yet? If so what numbers did you hit? I love your car. Maybe not so much the tired looking headlights from an FC but that's just my personal opinion. Nice car and great sounding run.
Still waiting on the new fuel pump, before we can raise the boost. The above run was at 8 psi (maybe 10 psi, autometer gauge) I hope to put the new pump in this weekend if it gets here, then I just have to find time to take the car back up to KDR.
My fuel pump was supposed to be here on Saturday, I enen paid for overnight delivery but FEDEX screwed up. So now it should be here today. Jason was cool though, he refunded my shipping charges. Now I need some larger secondaries and then take my car to a shop that can dyno tune my car. Are there any in the Chicago area? It is the closest large city to me. St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Omaha, etc.. are just to small. I am from San Diego but stuck out here in the middle of ******* nowhere. I cant wait to hear your car roll htem at 15psi. Good Luck. Didn't it make you nervous that he siad your motor could have blown then. Now you want to run it again at 12psi and 15psi. Kinda Risky!
I was very nervous with the whole dyno thing. I totaled my car 2.5 years ago and this is the first time it's run since. Ran the buget to thin and a motor is not in the buget. I think the engine (original 50K) can handle 15 psi, it's really all in the tuning. Dave is very good. There was no way for him to know the fuel pump was going to crap out. It would run fine until the secondaries came on then it would go way lean. I am just happy he noticed the wide band and got off the gas. The smart me would just have some fun with the car before upping the boost.
Don't worry XS knows what they are doing, don't run race gas whatever you do, unless you plan to run it all the time. XS has tuned so many PFCs it isn;t even funny. Relax, you are taking the safest route by having it tuned on dyno. I woudl be nervous if you tried to drive it without dyno tune. I wish I had someone clsoe by to help me out.
Listen to the pope. He runs his 3mm seals at 375psi. This guy is crazy!
Still a smartass.
I got my fuel pump about 25 minutes ago as well as some new plugs. I am also going to replace my O2 Sensor and my fuel filter. When I eventually go to the dyno what should I replace with new? New plugs, wires, filters, coolant, oil, etc.. Also do most places use a fan to help keep it cool? Should I bring my own ice?

how much does XS charge?
BTW, can anyone tell me how much XS engineering charges for dyno tuning? I'm planning on having my car tuned in the summer when I go single and I wanna know how much it'll cost me. I hear they charge on an hourly basis, so how much per hour and how many hours does it take to tune a car?
