Getting ready to sell my FD - what's it worth?

I know that there are a lot of opinions as to what different cars are worth, including a wide variety of opinions on FDs - whether to buy a $10K FD that's kinda trashed and needs a lot of work, or buying a $15K stock or mildly modded FD but needs new turbos or engine soon. or buying a $20K+ FD that's already built and tuned that needs the basic maintenance. I feel there are 4 things to think about when buying a sports car.

1) speed - FD has plenty of it
2) handling - FD is one of the best in the world
3) looks - FD is head snapper
4) unique - don't see one on every street corner like C5s

That being said, my FD is all of these and then some. I'll list my mods and goodies (probably will forget some) just to see what some of you guys think - I want to get atleast $21K for the car. Just trying to get some opinions...The car is not for sale yet as it is being painted so this should not be in the FS section...

1993 RX7 Touring - red - 80K on body, 5K on new engine

Fluidyne radiator
Greddy turbo timer, B&M short shifter

if the car is in very good condition and doesnt have any problems, id say it should be worth what youre looking to get although you may have to be patient for a buyer to come along with the funds. not everyone has 21k to drop on a car.

1995's are rare you have that going for it. 21k would be right if the car was a r2 or had black interior. if you have tan it better be really clean if u want 21k for it.

I'd say 19k

The paint will definantly help the sell, no doubt. Someone is going to see how good the red paint looks and their emotions are going to overtake them.

Paint and new motor and mods are definant pluses.. but its still got 80k and its a 93

good luck man

Everyone is going to jump down my throat for saying this but......

It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

It sounds like you have a nice car ad you should be able to get 20 for it being a 93 but it may take you a while to find someone to buy it. Be patient and you will get what you want for it.

Another thing to consider...even if a buyer believes the car is worth $21k...are they going to be able to get a loan from a bank for the amount. Both the buyer and bank have to believe the car is worth that much. (Unless, of course, the buyer happens is able to pay cash...but that is a much rarer situation probably).

Good luck, sounds like a sweet ride.

Pretty much any bank will finance an FD, but they will usually only finance the blue book value of the car, plus in some cases tax, title and tag. This leaves a big down payment to come up with for potential FD buyers. The wait for a buyer with financing and ten grand in cash may be a long one. Get it on the market and wait. Good luck.

on the bank...

I have an A++ credit rating...and out of the 6 bank and credit unions that I tried...NONE of them would give me more than 17k for a 93 RX-7 TT in decent shape.

Good luck to anyone trying to finance one, they best have about 6k in extra cash just in case.

thanks for the replies..obviously, this car isn't for some dipshit kid who can get a loan for a $20K+ WRX or Prelude - I know the car is 10 years old. My market is basically someone that will either pay cash or get the loan for $15K and pay cash for the rest. I'm thinking that I should have some good luck in my area since FDs are extremely rare and people seem to almost worship these cars aound here. I wouldn't sellmy car to just any idiot even if he did have cash since I put a lot of work into this car.

I know the R1 and R2 models are worth more but it's kind of nice haveing a sunroof - you can modify the suspension to handle as well as a R2.

I don't expect somebody from this forum to buy it since there are a lot of lowballers looking for that $10-15K FD which will eventually need atleast 10K in work if he wants it decently fast with new engine and turbos. Just seen 2 cars listed locally here

1997 Supra TT stock50K miles $33.5K SOLD
1993 Acura NSX stock 60K miles $31K SOLD

Gives me some hope

After going down the road of buying a stock, mint FD and modding it (which will also need a rebuild soon) I would pay the 21k....maybe even 22k...I have spent more money on my car than I want to admit but at least when I am done (if there is ever such a thing as done) it will be exactly what I wanted which was produced with my blood and sweat. If I had to do it over again...I would probably shell out 22-24k for an already fully modded FD...I really think this is the way to go for any new buyer unless they just love to tinker with the car like I do..

Good luck with the sale!

Don't let these lowballers get to you. That car is worth no less than $20K with those mods and new paint. I have a similar mod list so I know how much was invested, you've got probably twice as much invested with KDR labor cost. The car isn't worth much to someone that wants a stock FD but most people looking for an FD want those mods.

Basic KBB private party retail is ~$12,500. I believe NADA is a little lower. Your average joe who would fit the bill (cash or downpayment+financing) would probably have this info in his hand/head. It will be tough to sell an extra $9-10K ... no matter how fast it is. Only hardcore enthusiasts, like us, would justify the extra expense. I wish you good luck. Be patient.

Supposedly there has been alot of success with the sale of FDs around PA - the local Mazda dealers say people call each week looking for one - KDR has people calling looking for ones that he built that are putting down good power. If I don't sell it then I have the perfect car and will keep it. I'm building a house iN Florida now and will be moving down before the end of the year. Didn't really want to haul it down with me but will if I can't get a respectable amount for the car. I understand where the BBV is now - FDs are selling around here for $16-17K stock, 93-94. That's what I payed for my car 5 years ago. I've invested close to $40K with labor costs so I'm not trying to get rich here I'm looking foward to seeing the car with new VR paint.

I notice most of the lowballers in this thread are newbies and probably don't even have an FD (motive?). Any of the quotes below $20k in this thread are a joke.

Seriously Barry, to anyone who knows FDs, your car is easily worth $22k+. Everybody here knows how much effort you've put in and how well it's tuned. As you said, you're obviously not pandering to the young crowd that thinks $14k is a reasonable price for a mint FD

You just have to wait for the right buyer is all. I would go as far as to post in the "higher crust" national publications to sell it. Either that or a higher-end auction with a reserve of $22k+. You'll sell it at that price eventually.

BTW, what car are you going with to replace it?

lol, rynberg..I'm replacing it with a 98 base SL1 Saturn with 63K for around $2700...to keep things simple for a while. I want to pay my house off that I'm building in Florida and enjoy life with my wife and maybe start a small business down there. Maybe soon after I might pick up a used 95 MR2 Turbo to play with. I've had many MR2s and they are fun - I've done the FD thing and had many good and bad memories but I'd like to move on. It is fun while I have the FD of spanking cars on the highway that I could never afford

I hear you man, I hear you. I spent a good portion of the weekend working on the car instead of working on things around the house. Wife not happy. Hell, I wasn't that happy either....sometimes makes me wish I would be happy with a 95 Civic or a 98 Saturn . The home theater has not been improved in a LONG time and it doesn't like my car either....

I love my FD but in the end, it's just a car. I'm sure after you get settled into your new house (owning a house is great -- been a year for me), you'll start having fun with cars again. An MR2's not a bad choice, I've always liked them (last gen anyway).

where were all these buyers 8 years ago when mazda couldnt sell more than 500 FDs in 1995??? If they had been half as enthusiastic about the rx-7 then as they are now maybe we wouldnt have been cut off from rx-7 land. then again, i wouldnt want my car to be a dime a dozen like the rest of the cars out there. fortunately im one of the 500.

Barry,
Don't listen to the low ballers. From what I have read your car is very clean and has the best mods and tuning money can buy. (twins) The market for these cars is national and someone may want to purchase it from California where the prices are higher. He will be able to afford more because the loan amount is higher etc. I would post on the auto trader with a picture and a list of mods. My friend paid 23,000 for a 93 red touring model with the same mods except mostly Pettit equipment. His car was clean but I bet your car is in better shape. I would ask 23,500 and sit on it. It may take a while and you can always come down in price but you cannot go up. my .02
