Getting a good title for a 93

Hey guys,
I bought a 93 rx7 about a year ago and have been restoring it every since. The guy I bought it from was and still is working on getting the title. He was a mechanic that had the car left at his lot for over 2 and 1/2 years. Is there anything I can do? The car is just about ready for the road but I have no title to register it.

ANYBODY???
Please help,
thanks
Mike

If youve had the car for a year, then i dont think the guy you bought it from is doing jackshit to get you a title. have you tried calling the dmv?

He claims he is going through a title company, the problem is the guy that owned it abandoned it at this guys shop so he never had a title. I called the dmv and they said i have to have a good title to transfer to my name.

Did the mechanic do any work on the car that the previous owner didnt pay for? He can get what is called a mechanics lien on the title if that is the case. Just has to go to the dmv, tell them he did work which wasnt paid for. I believe all he needs is the mechanics lien then he can sell the car to re-coup his charges and the buyer (you) gets a clean title. Even if he didnt do work the car did sit there for all that time, he could probably get away with a storage charge that wasnt paid and get the same thing.

Do an internet search on google for Maryland mechanic lien and I bet something good comes up.

Sounds a bit funny although i once sold a '79 280ZX and was too lazy to get around to getting the guy the title for like 8 months (which I had to get reissued) from Alabama (no insurance required there at the time and I was a poor student)

You are going to have to consider seriously the fact that the guy never had the title and that the car was deserted maybe and he assumed ownership of it.

So, this is the story from what I understand.

The registered owner of the vehicle brought the car to your mechanic's shop 2.5 years ago. The car is assumed to be abandoned. One year ago, YOU paid the mechanic to purchase the car (Keep in mind that the title IS NOT registered under the mechanic's name).

I don't know about your relationship w/ your mechanic, but HE can screw you VERY easily. He is still NOT the registered owner of the vehicle. All a shop has to do, is file a mechanic's lien on the vehicle. Then, he will be shown as lienholder on the title (with a possibility of becoming full owner of the vehicle down the line). The ONLY thing that your mechanic has to say is that he never received any money from you to purchase the car...and you will be SOL.

Also, failure to report the purchase of a vehicle (in a timely manner) does not help your situation. All branches of government want their money. Good luck.

Why did you purchase a car w/o a title and/or proof of ownership?
