Hello everyone, I wanted to pass this information on so anyone interested in doing this could. Based off of interest in another thread in the race section, we are getting a group of RX-7's/rotorheads together at Virginia International Raceway(VIR) on May 21-23. The First Settler's Region Porsche Club of America is hosting the event but all cars are welcome. It is extremely cheap comparatively to any other organization that I've seen run there.

VIR is my favorite track. I will be coming from Tennessee and my drive is around 10 hours... it's that good.

This is a great opportunity to get your beautifully engineering suspension, engine, and brakes out on track and learn about your car instead of just talking about how great it is . If this is your first time, all you need is a car that is safe(secured seats, seatbelts, battery, no fluid spewing, etc...) and a SA2000 or better rated helmet.

Pricing of the event pulled from the website:
Solo Driver Registration (3 days) - $375

For non-instructor solo group drivers: Includes ~2.5 hours of track time on Friday, then a standard DE schedule on Saturday and Sunday (~90 minutes per day).

Student or Solo Driver Registration (2 days) - $275

This is the only option for Green/Blue group drivers and the 2 day option for solo drivers that can’t make it on Fri: Includes ~90 minutes per day of track time (instructed for Green and Blue groups, along with one AM classroom session per day).

Instructor Clinic attendees (3 days) - $250

For Instructor "Candidates" and "Mentors" who are attending the clinic in order to receive a PCA Certification: Includes PCA Instructor Clinic/certification plus at least one additional hour of track time after the clinic on Friday, along with instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned (instructing Saturday and Sunday is part of the requirement for certification), and lunch all three days.

Instructor/Instructor Mentor Registration - For PCA National Certified Instructors ONLY (3 days) - $100

For PCA National Certified Instructors who will offer their services as mentors/role players for the clinic attendees. These instructor mentors will role play as students during clinic track sessions, driving their own cars with instructor candidates riding along instructing. They do not need to attend the classroom sessions. Includes ~2.5 hours of “student free” track time on Friday (which includes time while clinic attendees are in class). Includes instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned and lunch all three days. If you're PCA Certified but don't want to mentor on Friday, then please sign up for the standard Instructor Registration below.

Instructor Registration (3 days) - $225

For instructors who are not participating in the Instructor Clinic on Friday. Includes ~2.5 hours of “student free” track time on Friday, instructor registration on Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned, and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

Instructor Registration (2 days) - $100

Instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned, includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

DE Intro (one session) - $50

Includes one classroom session and one instructed on-track session on Saturday beginning at 12PM.

I'd sooo be down for a road Atlanta event... probably need a trailer for that haul though. So I've only done non organized track events in the past, I'm guessing I'd have to do the solo driver registration (2 days?)

Road Atlanta is second behind VIR. It's a very fun track, but not as fun as VIR. I hope you can make the Road Atlanta March event Tim(and drive). It's going to be alot of fun and I'm hoping to bring out the yellow car. Justin is coming up/across and I think he is going to be my student.

Dan,
I don't think you'll be able to sign up in a solo group unless you have extensive track experience that can be verified through other organization or instructor references. Another way of doing it is requesting a check ride. I'm assuming it'll be your first time at VIR? If so, it's a great opportunity to have an instructor with you to show you the in's and out's of VIR... and there are alot. I still try to get Fritz to ride with me as much as I can to pick his brain on how to improve my driving.

This is unfortunately the only option for blue/green group driver's due to the instructor clinic going on Friday, but any of you guys who want to come hang out on Friday, feel free to. I believe hanging out in the paddock is a huge part of the track experience. Really really hope you can make it out Dan.

Ive never done an open track day at anything like this before, but would love to start getting into it. Would this be a good opportunity to start, or would you say its only for more experienced track guys? My FD wont be near ready, Id bring the 'ol S2000 out.

It's for beginners as well that's why they have instructors

Hahaha, that's probably why you keep telling me to just keep pushing it on mine with the bad turbos. Anywho, I actually might come up for this event if I can. I don't think I'd bring the 7 though and would prob just come to check out VIR and see if I can snag a ride with Fritz . Still kicking myself for not taking you up on that offer last time.

I hope you can make it Rich. There are track events every weekend, but this is hopefully going to have plenty of RX-7's as well as plenty of other really really nice cars... that Fritz will walk all over . I like to call Fritz "the people's champ". Taking his FD out there and destroying those 100k+ cars is a testament to how well the FD was engineered 17 years after it was produced and, more importantly, his driving.

That brings up a really good point(not directed at you catch-22, just triggered something I meant to post earlier). If you are fairly new to the track stuff, I'd highly recommend turning your boost down at this event. It will help manage under hood temperatures(water, oil, and air amongst other things) for the 20-30minute sessions and your engine will thank you. You also won't really need the power as you will be focusing on the turns opposed to the straights. I think the slower car you have, the faster you have to learn because it's human nature to want to catch up with people or pull away from them if you are in front of them(read: miata driver's). It will teach you to carry more speed through the turn by necessity(not wanting to get passed) opposed to being able to out drag race them in the straight(if you have a much faster car than they do). That's not always the case, but most of the time it is.

For reference, I run 13lbs of boost on my T78 and have a very conservative fuel and timing map. I'm prob. pushing somewhere between 300-330rwhp and I'm at 10/10ths of my ability well before the car is. You can check the video's in my sig from advance group runs, I can generally hold my own(thanks to the suspension and brakes of the car... maybe a little of my driving too... maybe). Fritz's and ptrhahn's cars are about the same as well. They have a little more power(330-360hp) than me, but they are much better drivers as well.

Last track day I went to, I also turned my boost down. No need to have too much power and not know how to properly handle it I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and sign up. I'll make it happen.
