General Price range for FD, help

I am looking at a 93 FD with 137k miles on the original engine. The engine it TOTALLY stock. I test drove it and it still pulled hard and did not seem to have any power loss. If I persuse purchasing the car i will have a compression test done just to be sure.

now the question
What would the genral price range be for the car? The seller is asking 13,700 but i think for a car with that many miles 12k or so would be a better deal. Any help?

It is an r1 and the interior is excellent.

I would definately have the engine thoroughly checked over. Check the compression of course, also check the coolant. See if it is straight water or if there is coolant there.

Search the forums for ways to temporarily keep an engine running. Then look for signs of those things being done on the car you are buying.

IIRC there is a way to temporarily fix o-ring problems with something called, metal weld or somthing like that. The stuff is supposed to help seal the seals, but you can only run straight water, because the coolant will break it down. Those are things you will want to watch out for.

10k at the most if its all stock and the original motor. you'll need to replace the engine and probably turbo's(4-7k), alot of suspension bushings(~1k) , radiator (375$), IC (because the plastic is probably dieing on the stock one, 1k).

Doesn't really matter.

If you think $12k is a fair price and the current owner doesn't. He isn't going to sell it to you.

So what matters is the condition of the car and if it's the car you want. Then you'll know if $13,700 is worth it.

yes but to know if it's really the car he want's, he's going to need market info isn't he? that's what he's asking for, not advice. and since some of us know a bit about how much $ we waste, we have the info.

$13,700 for an RX-7 with that many miles is a rip off! I wouldn't pay more than $10,000 for it. Use www.kbb.com and www.nada.com to get an aproximate value. And being on the west coast I have noticed the price for them seems to be higher. If you want an RX-7 try finding one online at www.autotrader.com and have it shipped to you. I have seen some really good deals on there. It is where I bought my 7! And I bought it for $8,500 and it only has 56,000 miles.

What difference does it make? He can tell the guy "Hey KBB says it's only worth $10,000". That doesn't mean the guy is going to drop the price. I guarantee when I sell my car it will not be at KBB price and many people will think "Hey, you can find a better one cheaper" but it wouldn't sway my price.

The fact is, *if* the seller doesn't want to move his price down, it doesn't matter. He will eventually sell it and sell it at that price if he has patience. Maybe he'll sell it to someone else later for a reduced price, but is this guy wanting to take that chance?

The real question is the condition of the car and how much toppdogg_1 is willing to spend, as I said in my original message.

If it's in good condition I would ask 14K for it locally. The only people that look on the auto trader and on the rx7 forum are cheap asses.

I paid $12K for a black 93 Touring 5 speed that is in incredibly good condition. The original paint looks new, the interior looks new, and still has that nice leather smell, the Bose system sounds like new.

The guy was asking $12,995, and we met at $12,000, after some dealing. Good thing I jumped the second it hit the trader. He was selling it too low in that condition. It also had 73K miles, and it was all original with no repairs ever, and included the records for every service, as well as a car fax.

I would say keep looking. That seems high for those miles.

Cheap asses? If you want an RX-7 you have to go where the deals are. Unless you are lucky and there is one near by.

Well the guy has TAKEN very well care of it, Takes it to hayes rotary to for everything. Going to go get a compression check on it and we did manage to bargine the price down quite a bit. When i drove the car it sounded and drove excellent. No 3000 rpm stutter, smooth idle, no 5th gear syncro problem, The paint is excellent except for 2 chips. THe interior is AMAZING, the seats (R1) are totally clean no spots, the console is still nice and black with no fading, no cracks in dash. G

Depending on the compression test, sounds like he's set a decent price.

I'd say it's fair. Really, what's a couple of k here or there if you like the car and it's available? If you're going to have it for a few years it doesn't make much difference. Negotiate a fair price and enjoy the car.

Worst case scenario you don't buy the car and you keep looking. Nobody has died.

yes, but i don't care if the guy will come down on the price later. i'm just saying that right now, at that price, i would walk.

my 10k value wasn't saying that this guy needs to go and buy this car for 10k, i was just saying to walk, and why.

we both went to a middle ground and I will be getting the car (as long as the compression checks fine) BTW: what should be a reasonable compression, i have it written down somewhere but i don't remember where.
I'm not trying to be in a rush to get a car but in my honest opinion this car is in EXCELLENT condition and it's what i've been looking for (i did have a few color preferences but it's no biggie to me)

if its not a good deal, keep looking. i found one for 10k but needed a new motor and terrible shape w/ tons of miles and i was pissed when it was sold... but two weeks later i bought mine for 12k in perfect condition.

Other than the miles it's in mint condition, and like I said it was pulling hard and i didn't feel any engine problems. If the compression test comes out good, IT"S ON WOOOOOOOOOOO

As others have said, that's a fair price if the compression checks out but water seal damage is inevitable at that mileage....

IMO, the condition of the paint and interior are more important because fixing either of those things costs more than replacing an engine.....

For you east coasters and midwesteners, FDs sell for quite a bit more here than they do there, like everything else....
