Gelfling owner with rough idle and B smoke
Gelfling owner with rough idle and B smoke
Special moment...first posting...I bet I embarrass myself....
Now that is over, let's get down to buisness...
So I took delivery of my new baby- '99 Rx-7. Took a while to start at the transport yard as it had been sitting on the truck for a week. Was on my way home with a well running car until 15 minutes later, the car stalled at low revs and would not start again. Towed it home. With some vigorous encouragement from the starter motor the car coughed its way above 1000 rpm to somewhat resemble an idle. There was a nasty vibration feeding back to the cockpit until I got it above 2500rpm and then it wasn't so noticeable. When I eased off the throttle and let it settle, the vibration would signal the death knock and it would stall once more. All the while, my baby was blowing more black soot than a 20 year old diesel...
I first of all though fuel delivery problem for the stall, then I thought misfiring plug for the vibration, then I thought upset accountant for the repairs and nagging wife for the buying the lemon in the first place.
Can one of you rotary legends help this poor, mechanically stunted, new rotary owner out?

compression check. that is the first thing you should do to a newly purchased car. getting a baseline of where it's at will help determine if you want to spend time zeroing in on sensors, electricity, etc... that may also adding to or completely causing the problem.

if it sounds like a V8 and rocks the car significantly, my initial guess is the engine is blown. do a compression test and rule out that culprit.

+1 or 2 or whatever we are on now. My buddy's line popped off and the same thing happened. My friends also thought it would be funny to do that to me when i was under the car changing the spark plugs...wasn't funny...
Well done! You get the pat on the back- Second rotor had detonated...Complete engine rebuild, just got it back!
However, since driving it back from the mechanics interstate, it has a rough idle that isn't being fixed with adjustment to the throttle body screw, and it is also dropping oil from somewhere near the second turbo onto the exhaust pipes.
