Gear whine diagnosis

I,m getting a whine from the tranny area that is noticeable when not in gear,I put in a 6 puck last year and replaced the pilot bearing and the fork assembly,I thought that would get it.
What am I looking at new synchros trans rebuild ?

So the noise happens when stopped in neutral? Does it change at all when you depress the clutch?

When I had a 5.0L mustang I would get a small chatter when in neutral. It too would go away when I pressed in the clutch. It turned out to be a release/throw out bearing. Not sure if that applies to an FD.

Does anyone know if the input shaft bearing is a straightforward/easy fix or a job for a pro?

It requires (obviously) dropping the transmission. It does not require a full teardown. You draint the oil, remove the bellhousing and pull this bearing from the input shaft. It takes a special bearing puller to get this pulled in most cases but a lot of transmission shops will have something that will work.

I think if you drop off the trans at a transmission shop they could do it in an hour.

It not too bad of a job, but you need one hell of a puller. Most of the time you will also need to replace the input shaft.

And changing the input shaft DOES require a full transmission rebuild.
