gauges tray/pod/installation
hi all
as you guys probably noticed i am asking lots of questions lately but i rather ask and get it right+ i dont know much about these cars+i had my fd for a month so please be patient with me
i have decided to get 3 gauges as i have got only stock at the mo
it will be:
-boost gauge
-water temperature gauge
- and have no idea what third one is most important(dont want to have milion gauges everywhere in the car so the 3rd one must be a neccesity gauge-please advise)
why three?
i want to blank this ugly hole off and here's my next question:
can you tell me where to get a pod/tray that will fit this hole? maybe i can get w whole set(gauges, tray) to just put in?
and the last:
is wiring these little gizmos difficult? should i go to specialist with it? how much it would roughly cost me?
thank you

As far as what to get for a 3rd gauge, for a fairly stock car I would recommend oil temp. The wiring is not difficult, but if you don't like doing electrical work just let a professional do the install. Labor costs vary (especially between continents) so you'll just have to get estimates if you want to go that route.

IMO, I would look at gauges which have Peak/Warning/Hold features. These will be more expensive, but they can basically "play back" what happened as well as have the Warning feature which you can program when the warning lights up (i.e. you want to know when you coolant temp gets to 230F).

I couldn't edit my post above, but I saw last night that a forum member makes and sells din covers and bins with cut-outs for gauges. He is located in South America but I can't recall his name. His stuff looked really good.
As for the install, as most have noticed, I'm a truly terrible mechanic. Even so, with the help of some of the how-to's that are available online, I would tackle the gauge installation myself. The hardest thing for me is figuring out where to go through the firewall.

Those din panels look great. Almost worth changing out my head unit for.

I'm not ready to make any of those changes at this point. My next project is to install the Greddy elbow that I have coming and then install the PFC that I've got sitting right here.

Right. The upper IC pipe is coming with it. I'm not going to have the lower IC pipe. I think that is all I'll need are one or two silicone couplings to make it work. At least I hope so. Any idea on where to get decent couplings?

wideband o2 sensor/gauge tells you how much air and fuel is in your exhaust so you dont run too lean, or lose power by running too rich. It is the one crucial instrument for proper tuning.
The stock o2 sensor is a 1 volt narrow range sensor, it doesnt have the resolution needed to give accurate readings for tuning. A wideband sensor uses a 5 volt sensor and is much more precise.
There is alot of information in the forums about wideband controllers/sensors. I have the innovative lc-1

I would skip the oil temp and get a wideband or an EGT gauge, either or both of those are probably the most important gauges anybody can have for a car like the FD in my opinion, especially if you plan on modifying it at all.
As far as gauges themselves go check out www.prosport.com. You can get some peak/hold gauges like mentioned earlier in the thread for a lot cheaper than some of the other companys with pretty inflated prices. I have a set of them right now and I think the quality is good.

My highly reputable rotary specialist advised I don't use the prosport gauges. I picked up a couple against their advice, but am undecided as to whether or not I'm going to install them. They said I should get some quality Defi gauges or maybe some new Greddy gauges(I have Greddy gauges, but they broke ). Can you attest to the quality and accuracy of the Prosport gauges? We all know the last thing you want in a turbo rotary is to have inaccurate gauges.
