Gathering data about FD3S crashes, please help
I'd like to perform a study of the possible causes of accidents involving RX-7's, specifically the 93-95's, and would appreciate everyone's help. Here is the info I'm looking for:
1. Date, time
2. Location , road condition, traffic condition, car condition
3. Age & gender of driver & passenger(s) at time of accident
4. Driver history: (previous owned cars , driving record, and applicable race history)
5. Vehicle condition: estimated HP , equipped tires (and age of tires).
6. Damage: to driver/occupants, to car, and to any others involved.
7. Other notes: estimated speed, events leading up to the crash, racing/commuting, link to more info (forum threads, photos, newspaper articles, etc...)
Feel free to also submit stories about anyone you know who has wrecked an FD3S, or any other RX-7 for that matter. Please follow the format as much as possible.
Thanks,
-scott-

Kento, cewrx7r1: it's obvious that we all have our theories, and most of them are probably valid. Personally I'd like some data to back them up or disprove them. I would also like to explore some of the things that aren't brought up as often; there are many factors that can lead to a wreck.
Maybe someone was pissed off or tired or distracted, and drove without thinking and crashed. I think that's important to bring up, there are lots of things that can be deemed "driving like an idiot."
Maybe someone went autocrossing twice, thought they were hot stuff, and crashed their car because they hit a patch of gravel. Technique is not everything, responsiblity and good judgement are also paramount.
Right now I'm assuming that most wrecks involve drivers who have little to no roadracing/autox experience, a few HP mods, and less-than-ideal tires. It seems like a few of them have been on larger diameter wheels also (shorter sidewall = less forgiving). I'd like to see how much a factor age is; we can safely say that 18-19 is too young, how about 21 year olds? 25? 55?
I would like to make a concise list to which newbies can be pointed, sort of a "Learn from that other guy's mistake" thing.
Fatman: any accident is applicable here. Anything that could make someone file a police report or insurance claim. Total loss would be the damage.
polo, thanks for sharing your story, I'll be sure to avoid driving camels at 240mph. Was there any damage to the camel toe?
[edit:] rousu, thanks for sharing also.

Date: December 22nd 2002
Location: Yosemite Rd, Lake Arrowhead, CA
Age:17, Gender Male
Driver history: previously owned Mitsubishi Diamante, 1 speeding ticket (72 in a 60), no accidents, collisions, etc.
Vehicle condition: stock, decent tires (Dunlop SP8000s with a fair amount of wear)
Damage: 1 dent in the hood, 1 small hole in the left headlight cover
Estimated speed: stopped. Condtions: snowy. What happened: I was trying out the new snow chains (just in case I needed them someday), had driven less then one mile from home, turned around and headed back. Flat, twisty road with several blind corners. As I was driving as slow as physically possible (chains are like that) I saw a Jeep wrangler hauling *** coming the other direction. I stopped very quickly, he locked up his breaks and slid across the road at an angle (kinda sideways), just bumping the front of my car with his tubular steel bumper. No injuries, no mechanical problems, and could have been avoided if I had NOT gone out, or the other driver had been going less then 30mph on a snow covered road filled with blind turns. Overall cost of the damage (well, what the insurance company paid me) $1546 (if I remember right). The $800 for the hood alone plus painting and the head light cover made sure it was expensive. Otherwise, no collisions or accidents or damage the the FD. Now I'm all of 19 and much more careful, though I'm still 19. Good luck compiling this stuff. Josh

Kento, I agree with you on most of that. Please note that I never said anything about coming to a single concise conclusion; I prefer to think of this as a "list of what NOT to do" for people who want to avoid crashing their RX-7. For instance, in talljosh85's case, the lesson might be to avoid snow because even if you have your car under control, many others don't (especially if this was in SoCal mountains) and you run a higher risk of getting hit.
aREX4X, you bring up a very good point. However, insurance companies already have plenty of access to statistics; that is why young unmarried males will have high rates with these cars, it's already been proven that they (we?) crash more often. What I want to know is WHY, in order to avoid becoming a statistic. I'm trying to be proactive here.
One of the main factors that determines whether rates are raised or lowered each year is how many (and how expensive) claims were filed the previous year for each driver category in each automobile. If my 'study' (and I use that term loosely) helps prevent people from crashing their RX-7's, then your rates are much more likely to decrease as opposed to increase. I'm not an insurance agent if that's what you're trying to say.
It seems people are very defensive about this... are there that many bad drivers in this community?

Nearly all accidents are avoidable. Now I don't mean to say it's not the other driver's fault when he hits you but the far majority of the time there is an "out" if you're paying enough attention to what you're doing. I live in a busy metropolitan area and used to make a 60 mile commute each day to/from downtown Dallas during both rush hours. I saw a few accidents everyday and nearly every time I saw the wreck coming before the people involved did because they're so oblivious to what is going on around them. People don't pay attention to what they and other drivers around them are doing and that puts them at a disadvantage when things go wrong.
I don't understand how someone drives crazy through heavy traffic, cutting people off all the time and the pissed people then chase him so they can pass him, box him in, flip him off; whatever. That doesn't make sense. I don't want to be anywhere near that idiot, he's welcome to get as far in front of me as possible.
I have people literally honk and scream at me because I refuse to make a left turn if I can't clearly see every lane of oncoming traffic. If there's a large car or truck across the intersection blocking my view I'll just sit there. The guy in the SUV behind me can rightly complain that no traffic is coming (he can see over everything) and this ******** in the sports car should move but if I can't see I'm not going. I don't care how much it pisses you off. Why would anyone drive into a situation where you can't SEE?
God help you if your light turns green around here and you just pull out. My personal record is 7 cars turning in front of me after my light was clearly green. They weren't even nose to tail, just felt they deserved the right to drive through the intersection when their light was clearly red for at least a few seconds. It's funny. They know you're going to be coming so the speed up and scream across the intersection while other cars head for them and try to "scare" them. People are stupid. I could have had a dozen wrecks by now and none of them would have been my fault but I'd rather just not have one in the first place.

Lies, damned lies and statistics!!
I would recommend that you consider looking at

ps. most (the vast majority) of the accident reports I have seen on this forum are best summed up as: "I was driving like an inexperienced moron".
