Gas. Which one.

Well I'm up here in Canada and was wonder which gas should I be using. Here are my options:
91 Octane.
91 Octane (V-Power from Shell).
92 Octane w/ ethanol.
94 Octane w/ ethanol. (Not to many places carry it but is accessable)

I've read good and bad about V-Power and ethanol but my car likes the 94.

Which one should I use?

Thanks.

94 available at most Mohawk/Husky, many chevron, some petrocan. Don't think I've ever seen it at Esso or Shell

I would recommend 94 Sunoco or 94 Chevron if you are in Quebec most PetroCanada have 94 as well.

Does the ethanol make a difference on the motor?

Ethanol runs cooler and has higher octane. Those things are good for the rotary.

The downside is that it has lower energy density per unit volume, and your fuel injection system works on a volume/min basis. So if you switch from 100% gasoline to 90/10 ethanol, your mixture will become slightly leaner. IMHO, unless your tune is really well done, there is enough richness to compensate.

It also has lower overall fuel economy since you pay by volume and measure fuel economy by volume.

If you want to maximize your margin of safety I recommend using the name brand gas (Chevron is good stuff) of the highest octane, and avoid gas stations that don't stay busy.

Dave

The 94 with ethanol is mostly from mohawk and husky.

Chevron runs 94 without Ethanol. That's your best best. It is fairly pricey though.

The octane rating scale used in the UK/Europe is different to the one used in North America. An octane rating of 99 in the UK is approximately equivalent to one of 94-95 in NA.

Thanks for all the good info. I guess I'll stick with 94 w/ethanol. I'm not to worried about gas milage (it's not my daily driver) and I do plan on getting a good tune next year. taylor7787 if you live here in Calgary there are a few Husky/Mohawks that carry 94 w/ethanol. Just so you know. I use the one on 4th and 19th ST NW. You can also go to www.myhusky.ca.

Yup, we have a a number of them over here in BC... well at least in my area. I'm in Victoria and I've noticed them over in Vancouver as well (all having 94 as their highest octane).

Shell V-Power

I would recommend Shell V-power.

On both my FD and my wife's Audi A4 2.0T, it increased gas mileage by close to 10% over several tankfulls, both highway and slow-speed driving (from 17 to ~20 - mixed conditions - on the FD, and 30 to ~33 - freeway - on the Audi). This is compared to Sunoco Ultra in the FD, and various other premium fuels in the Audi. The A4 mileage was compared during a 5000-mile vacation - we drove to New Mexico.

On the FD, it also makes the engine run smoother, both at idle and on the road.

The Vpower in canada is only 91 octane, i have used it before with good success, but like to use the husky 92 or husky/mohawk 94 with ethanol just soley because i figure the higher the octane the better.

stick with the most readily available, highest octane.

which seems like 92.

if you can, i would go for the 94 if you're ok with it

That was my thought in using the Sunoco 94 octane fuel in the FD. But the FD ran so much better when I started using Shell V-Power, that it convinced me to use it whenever I can. V-Power in OH is 93 octane, but out west (TX, OK, NM) it is as low as 91. The mileage increase with the A4 Audi 2.0T was additional evidence.

I think 91 octane is OK for the FD as long as you don't run lean (low fuel in tank, too much power for fuel system to keep up, etc.). In CA, IIRC, 91 octane is also the most they can get with any street fuel. And, if you do run lean, even 94 octane is no guarantee against detonation.

So, it's up to you - but, I'm going for the obvious better mileage and performance, and I'm convinced V-Power gives that.

Went to the shell station today and found out shell now has nitrogen in their gas tanks.

I didnt want to put it cause i wanted to make sure it was ok, which im assuming it is, i wanted to prevent an easy mistake. So here i am.

I went on their site and found this article. Apparently they just started this last month.

http://www.shell.us/home/content/usa...en_030209.html

Reason why im posting this is because i was wondering how much different this is as opposed to fuel additives you get at autozone and such?

I have heard of people actually having problems from using these fuel additives. Like excess smoke, poor idle etc etc.

Thoughts?

^I work at a shell as a mechanic and was wondering the same thing. Think its just promotional just to sell more gas. I dunno.
