Unhappy Garfinkle and I are stumped...(PFC problem)

Ok, I already posted this in the PFC forum and wasn't getting too much luck in there. On with the problem...I received the Power FC the other day and I went to install it. Cut the CORRECT*** wires (checked it 80XXX times). Plug up the PFC and Commander and try to start it...no luck, it just cranks and cranks (sounds real healthy though). So I plug up the stock computer and VROOM...starts right up no problems. So I went to Garfinkle aroun 10:30 the other night and we start to try and figure this out. We check the wires that I cut...check them again, and one more time. They are the right ones.

So Garfinkle has a PFC in his car and he also had one in a box never* been used. I tried both of those and still the same....crank crank crank. So we put the new one in his car and it works, it gives him spark and fuel. We are stumped. So we pull a plug out and I crank over. What happens is -> While I crank over it doesn't spark at all, but when I let off the key it gives one spark. If you look through the spark plug hole also there is no mist...which led us to believe the injectors weren't firing either. I've checked the grounds and wires and I've come across nothing.

I've tried leaving a ECU connector off and what happened then is this -> The injector duty cycles went to 2.5 and 3.9% after I let off the cranking. Also when all the connectors are plugged up to the PFC it just reads 0.0% on the Injector Duty Cycle. Garfinkle and I are totally confused. I would appreciate it if someone could give me some help with this, it's alot of money just to have sit there and do nothing . If you need any more details just let me know. Thanks guys

Jack

Hi, What year is your rx-7 and what year is your mates?

I ask this because I think the 1992-1995's are 8bit or 12bit ecu's (cant remember which one) and above that are 16bit ecu's. Not sure if getting these mixed up on the wrong car could do that or not but its somthing to think about.

not very familiar with the PFC at all... but what you described happened to me once with a haltech. in my friends rx3, we moved the coils durring the install process and forgot to ground them. same thing would happen. durring cranking no spark. when you turned key from off to on position, it would give one spark and that was it... maybe something along those lines???

Ok thanks rxrotary2 7, I got a new coil harness when I was at Pettit and they said that the new ones don't come with grounds. I think I still have my old one laying around and it has a ground on it, I will try that. Thanks Guys any more things to check while I'm in there would help out alot.

Probably a long shot, but have you reconnected the wires you cut and tried to start with the PFC? From what I understand, it should still run without any cutting.

BTW, is your PFC Brand new from Japan? I just received mine and haven't installed it yet. I think I read somewhere that only the USA PFC's come with pre-loaded maps....Maybey your PFC is blank. Try loading a base map.

Just a thought

Thanks for the thought jpandes, the PFC is loaded with a map. I got it from Jason at the RX7Store. Please feel free to chime in. Good thought though, thanks

Garfinkle said it will start with the stock Ecu. Jack thinks the car is not an auto that is changed to 5 speed . The PFC operates the hand commander but not the car . Two of the three units have programs for sure, Jack is sure the third one does as well .

find someone with a datalogit and load a base map. do not use the commander and keep it unplugged. see if the car starts as a plug in ecu.

Thanks

by the way, when you installed the Power FC, did you ground it? did you connect the case with a metal part on the car?

if not, try that.

We blocked off AWS, took out PCV, put in a few new chevk valves, Bypassed the FPR, some new hoses, oh and that ground that they sell there...put that from the battery negative terminal to the chassis, streetport, 3mm seals, new FPD, balanced/flowed injectors, new gaskets, some other stuff that has nothing to do with the PFC problem. I will post it if I think of something else.
