Fuel Slosh Solutions

So I had fuel slosh issues with my Bosch 044 pump in my 93. I bought a Hyperion fuel cover and that seemed to have resolved the issue. However, just the other day I started having slosh issues after hard left hand turns and getting back on the gas, even with 2/3rds of a full tank. When I installed the cover, all the baffling was in place. I don't know if something maybe broke off in there. However, I was wondering what you guys recommend as definitive solutions to prevent this from happening without turning it into a cluster of a project. I was considering the FEED Fuel Splash tank. What do you guys recommend?

I am going to go into the tank when I have some time to see if something came loose. FWIW, the car has a good suspension setup and I run the 140-200 treadwear class street tires and am a capable driver. So I really want something that is going to prevent this under heavy cornering forces. I really don't like when it happens.

Relocate the 044 inside of this: Standard Fuel Surge Tanks

Use a different/standard pump as a lifter.

Problem solved

Here is one that will do the same thing for half of the price IE SUBMERGED 044 BILLET SURGE TANK. and if you have access to a welder and dont mind making something you can just buy the top plate. IE Billet Surge Tank Front Plate 044


However, I think if you are just starting to experience this problem maybe something came dislodged or is malfunctioning.

Is there not a baffle system that works effectively? The FEED unit is 180.00. The external reservoir with additional pump is going to turn this into more of a project than I was hoping.

I'd rather spend $500 once, and have a solid product for the life of the vehicle, instead of trying to save a couple hundred bucks now and having to spend a couple hundred bucks more later to replace/fix the cheaper product, while having to deal with the headache along the way. That $500 is a drop in the bucket when compared to what many owners end up spending on their "heavily modified" cars.

I'll admit, it has a little bit of "bling" factor but it also seems to be constructed in a manner that makes it WELL worth the money.

You assume that people can't fabricate something of similar (or better) build quality for less money?

There's a few bucks in aluminum, some fittings, and a bulkhead electrical connector involved with that part you referenced.

For half the price, you could have something custom made to your exact specifications...if you have the resources, of course.

When was the last time you had something custom made, on a CNC mill, that was half the price, same (or higher) quality, and came with a lifetime warranty?

Point me in that direction and I'll gladly jump on it!! But honestly, after having multiple items "custom" made on CNC mills I am kinda skeptical of your claims.. If you are good at auto cad and have access to the machinery than awesome!! Most people aren't, and don't.

As for the whole idea that its just some "light fab work"... yeah My fab guy pointed me towards them after HE sought out one of our engineer friends who works for a rather well known aeronautical company asking to have him draw up the cad file. The engineer pointed the fab guy to radium.

Again, if you wanna throw something together using metal scraps and pvc piping then feel free I'll still sleep well at night, even if I put an extra $300 towards a quality product.

Again, there's no need for CNC work and all that fancy nonsense.

You can make your own out of aluminum tubing, aluminum flat stock, some weld-on AN fittings, and be done with it. $200 MAX

But, go ahead and put words in my mouth in regards to PVC and metal scraps if that helps you sleep at night.

In fact I did at an autox last year.

Yeah, I'll be gettting the external pump version with higher volume. I figure that, with my fuel filter on one side and an 044 on the other should def get me sorted

I would buy a turbo kit from rx7store before cheaping out on a surge tank (and I will NOT buy anything from them if there is even a remote alternative... because they use cheap **** whenever they can).

If he did then he completely negated the purpose of a surge tank.. I'm guessing/hoping that his other three ports are on the far side, and not shown in that photo.

To function properly a surge tank should be mounted vertically, and needs (at the minimum) four ports. One port from the fuel tank to the surge tank, one port from the surge tank to the engine (with the pump being either inside the surge tank, or inline between the surge tank and engine), one port from the engine returning to the surge tank, and one port from the surge tank returning to the fuel tank.

The port from the surge tank returning to the fuel tank should me mounted as high as possible to ensure that any air returns to the tank asap, and the port feeding the fuel pump/engine should be mounted as low as possible, to ensure that ONLY fuel goes towards the engine.

If you do it differently than you're minimizing, or completely negating, the effectiveness of the unit.

I'm saying that the surge tank you found after using google for 30 seconds does not fit my wants and needs. EVEN if it did offer what I want (a high quality oversized surge tank designed for an external/inline pump with -6 and -8 fittings) I wouldn't purchase it.

I don't make nearly as much money, being an Enlisted guy, as I could/would make as an equivalent civilian. That can result in one or two mindsets 1) get the cheapest stuff you can find, focusing on quantity of items at the expense if item quality. 2) getting the best items you can, focusing on quality over sheer number of items. I value quality over quantity. I also understand that if you cut corners in the name of cost, this car will bite you in the ***, and you'll end up spending more fixing/replacing what you bought already in the long run. Not to mention you'll have to deal with the hassle along the way.

Honestly I don't give a **** what you do with your car, or what you think about me and my car. I'm not here for you. I always try to buy the highest quality item I can for my car, because they last, they perform reliably, and they are worth it. That, and I'd rather support the creators who take the time to engineer great products. I accept the fact that their original ideas will cost more money. It's my way of showing my respect to the people who ACTUALLY support us, by supporting them back.

That surge tank you linked appears to be held together by two fittings, using the pump as the connecting medium. If vibration were to work those loose, and that tank started to leak, it could EASILY lead to a blown engine. 034 doesn't mention anything about a warranty anywhere.

The "overpriced" Radium is A) protected by a lifetime warranty. B) It's a well designed product, that looks nice as well. C) It's pressure tested prior to shipment (even though it's meant to be in a zero pressure environment). D) It's secured completely independent of the fuel pump, with multiple, sealed and isolated, attachment points on both ends.


At the end of the day a surge tank is nothing but an intermediary reservoir for fuel, it's extremely simple in theory. I'm not arguing that, you *could* literally make one out of $40 worth of pipe and fittings from Lowes if you wanted to... provided the materials used withstand the fuel, but that's not the point. The point is that I'd rather have a quality product, and I'm willing to pay that little bit extra (and it REALLY is a very small fraction compared the total amount I've put into my car) for it.

At the end of the day it's up to the owner of the car to decide what is more important to them. Me? I'll take quality even if it costs more, because I know it won't cause me more of a headache while costing significantly more down the line. My own history of ownership provides plenty of examples and validations for myself. If you want me to share my last 8 years worth of ownership experiences with you then I'd be happy to, but not in an open forum (derailing a thread) and not if you're going to be an annoying little bitch about it.

Do and think what makes you happy...

Funny you assumed I "googled" that surge tank. You're pretty good at assumptions and just coming up with your own answers before getting facts straight. You assume that because it's more expensive it MUST be better. LOL. Great mentaility guy.

I used to be enlisted, too and with BAH, BAS, and a roommate, I wound up making a good amount of money, so I can't commiserate with you in regards to being a poor enlisted guy.

Did you ask 034 if they provide a warranty? Did you even look in to the product before making all of your assumptions? I'm gonna go with no.

You want to waste your hard earned enlisted pay on an overpriced, overengineered product? By all means. Because you're right. It's YOUR car and you're going to do whatever you want.

However, the OP asked for options and that's what I did. Gave him options. Your opinions of my options have all been assumptions based on your "more money equals more quality" ideals.
