fuel pump not priming

well the car wants to start, it started for about 5 seconds really sluggishly. i come to the conclusion that the fuel pump isnt priming. it runs for a few seconds after i try to start the car, but when i first click the key into acc the fuel pump does not prime. my friend put his hand on the fuel pump relay and it clicks when i put the key to acc. any thoughts??? help!!!!

i probably should add that when i jump FP and ground when the key is in ACC the fuel pump wont run. i know it worked b4 i did the simplification because i was trying to pinpoint where the fuel smell was coming from b4 all this happened.

When you find out, please let me know I've been trying to figure out the same issue since last Saturday.

Stupid question, but how do you test relays? If you can hear it switching on and off, is there more that could be wrong?

the click is not a fool proof method. chech a wiring diagram supply the needed ground with a test light and see if the pump works.

im a idiot sorta. i tried jumping the wrong ****** leads in the diagnostic plug. anyways, the FP works when i jumper FP to GND. but still not priming upon puttin the key into ACC. it fired for a few seconds today, then died. i can feel fuel goin through the fuel line too, and back through the return line. just seems like its not gettin signal when i have the key in the on position. weird.

Looking at the '95 wiring diag. you need these two conditions to activate the FP relay (not to be confused with the FP SPEED relay):

1-Ignition Switch in "ON" or "START" positions

AND

2-Jumper FP to GND on diag connector (or allow ECU to ground this as a normally running FD would)

According to my diagram (again, for a '95), the ACC position shouldn't power on the relay... which would make sense since you do not want the FP to run when you're sitting in the car listening to the radio, engine off.

Another thing to check is ground continuity on the FP terminal when trying to start the car. The ECU should pull that down when you're trying to start the car.

but i thought the FP should "prime' just for a few seconds then shut off. but thats good advice, ill have to make my gf start the car while im in there with my ohm meter.
