fuel overflow = mud guard disaster

Gas is like $1.92 here now...crazy. Premium is $2.02 so I filled my FD up today, got it a little TOO full I guess because once it sat in the garage and the day warmed up, the fuel expanded to the point it was coming out the filler neck. Ran down the side of the car and...basically ate the mounting tape that helps secure the left rear mud guard.
The whole damned thing just came away from the fender about an eighth of an inch.
So I had to take it all off, clean off the old double-sided tape, and go to AUTOZONE and get some new 3M super strength mounting tape, and re-do the whole deal.
This was actually kind of a bitch, and I am not 100% happy with the results, but it will do for now.

Have you tried the body panel spray? It's meant for putting door trim, emblems, and in your case mud guards. The 3M material obviously takes up some space so getting it tight is sometimes an issue. I haven't tired it myself but it says it's VERY STRONG. I know they stock it at Autozone, maybe you should give it a shot...

One of the problems is...along the upper perimeter of the mud guard on the inside there are these dozens of little ridges or fingers that are about .100 tall and .500 long, they are here for reinforcement I guess.
The stock adhesive that comes on them is basically a very strong double-sided tape, but...it is EMBEDDED into these little fingers much deeper than I could get the tape to go into it.
The first time I put it on....the guard stood out about .080 all the way and the gap was just unacceptable.
So I went and carefully trimmed down the little fingers about 50% of their height.
If I was to do this again, I would trim them all the way off and go with the wider tape that 3M offers, about 3/4" instead of the 1/2" that I used.

mono4lamar - I really had thought about using that adhesive you mention but was swayed from it by the need to keep the guard in contact with the fender as the adhesive 'set', even though these guards are molded to fit the contour of the fender...they are not a perfect fit by any means.

Yeah, for some reason the Wichita, Kansas area has the cheapest gas in the country right now.

First time I have filled my Suburban's 42 gallon tank up for less than $100 in a LONG time.

lol....it takes "stupid SUV things" to pull large boats...which I have.

And remember...it gets better mileage than my FD.

So...not real sure why it is "stupid"?

A full refill on my Rx-7 is generally 18 gallons @ approx 20 miles a gallon so... lets just say 350 miles.

A 42 gallon tank @ the same rate of 20 miles a gallon but since you say they get better gas mileage, lets give it an extra 2miles per gallon... that is 924 miles. Do SUV's really go 1000 miles per tank!!!!! haha

Well...my FD gets about 13 - 15 mpg, and my Suburban gets 17 - 18 mpg.

Put it this way: Where I boat at is about 300 miles away. I can drive down there, drive all week long into town when I am not on the water and do errands and stuff, and drive all the way back home if I really want to push things.

Big fuel tanks for the win!

dump the tape and get 3m heavy duty spray adhesive... let it air for about 3-5 min then put the guard back on and hold it for about a min... should be golden
