Fuel Leak? please help!!!!
Yet another problem.
Ok, so I used to ocassionally smell a really heavy fuel smell (seems like its unburnt) inside the car. I know. This is bad. But, it always seems to dissipate after some time, and after starting and stopping the car a few times, i.e. parked the car overnight, then drove the next morning... everything was back to normal. No smell. The car drove perfectly aside from the idle stooping a little low when the smell was apparent.
Well, the fuel smell came back again, and with a fury. It was nearly impossible to keep her idle up without having to stay on the gas and keep the revs up above 2k. It was also making a "put put put" kind of shaking the car as it tried to stay running, almost sounding like fouled plugs. If I let off, she'd die immediately. The stench was making my eyes and throat dry, and a little smoke was seeping out from under the hood. Once I got it driving or moving at all, it seemed much better, completely smooth (no ignition hiccups) and easier on the car, and the smell wasn't as strong (most likely because I was moving and circulating the air). This problem seems to happen at the worst times, I was stuck in traffic with no where to pull over, and I had to keep her running. I actually made it home, and I am scared to try starting it up again.
My guesses, and probably not good ones, so this is where you guys are hopefully going to help.
1. Power FC - faulty reading, ECU is flooding the fuel system, thinking it needs a lot more gas than it really requires.
2. Bad ignition - spark plugs, wires, coils, not entirely making full combustion. Although, the car wouldn't be driving "decently" when it's moving. Just the idle is bad, and decel (off gas pedal, in 2nd gear for example)
3. Fuel injector leak - Is this common? Or is there a weaker point in the fuel system that would be causing this problem.
If you have more questions about how the car drives, I know I might not have listed everything in terms of making an adequate diagnosis, so chime in and please help where you can.

Check the vaccum line from your MAP sensor to the intake manifold...
the injectors will leak from the upper o-ring and also through the injector electrical portion itself...mainly happens on the side feed injectors, top feed injectors arent as prone.

hrmm. map sensor. why didn't I think of that. I'll check that tommorow. thanks. As for the fuel injectors, is there a write up on how to replace these or check 'em to make sure they're still sealing?

Fuel pulsation dampener could be failing. If you have a fuel leak you could be risking an engine fire if you continue to drive the car. I had my injectors rebuilt by RC, installed a new FPD, and I still have that smell. I ordered a fuel hose recall kit, and new O rings from rx7.com to try to resolve the issue.
I started a very similar thread a week or so ago. Look for it; Mahjik posted how he extended the fuel lines to test for leaks. Pretty helpful. I will be doing the same when I receive the parts.

what does the fuel pulsation dampener do? I had my injectors rebuilt as well, and they sorta failed because they sat for too long before being reinstalled. Since then, I found someone willing to trade me ones that were working, and it seemed to hold up fine, although I have no idea what type of shape they're in now. Is this stuff possible to fix on my own, or should I take it somehwere? I know I sound a bit ignorant, its late and I'm tired.

Checked the MAP sensor, its still ok. both sides of vacuum lines are attached. So what is included in this fuel hose recall kit? And again, is this something thats possible for me to do on my own?
