fuel leak

A couple of months ago, I pulled out my 850s and noticed fuel dripping on the ground, in the vicinity below the rear of the turbos but closer to the middle of the car. I want to emphasize, that the injectors were not in the rail when this was happening, nor was fuel overflowing from the rail. The gas eventually stopped dripping once I removed the gas cap. The fuel system was depressurized prior to removing the injectors. The car has remained in that stage waiting for parts. Of course I forgot about the leak and yesterday I installed some 1300s reassembled everything and tried to start the car. It did not start and I noticed fuel on the floor again. Today, I removed the UIM and activated the pump via F/P and gnd; I could not see any leaks. It does not appear to be coming from the regulator. Any ideas would be appreciated. Remember this happened with both the injectors in and removed, also the 2ndary rail was never removed.

Thanks everybody

I read your thread about your bad fuel pulsation dampener. Do you think the fuel would pool around the dampener and why do you suspect it? I appreciate your response, just trying to understand why.

thanks

These are notorious for failing and causing fuel leaks of the sorts you mentioned. The FPD is located at the rear of the Primary fuel rail. When I replaced mine I had to rip out my rats nest to get to it. This is not an easy job but it is doable. While you are in there I would do any other fuel system repairs that are needed and replace all the fuel lines leading to and from the fuel rails.

Don't drive your car until you get this fixed, it will catch on fire.

I can see the FPD but there appears to be no fuel around it. I guess the fuel could ride the fuel line before dripping to the ground. I tried to cycle the fuel pump once more using the test connector box, but the only thing I hear now is the relay clicking. I wanted to make certain it is the FPD before I pull the rats nest. Do I need to somehow relieve the fuel pressure before I the pump will activate again? I would think with the lines somewhat pressurized I would be able to see fuel leaking, but of course it does not appear to be leaking anywhere.

Again, thanks all the replies

The best way to tell what it is is to see what part of the system is visually the cleanest, the gas leak will wash away any road grime.

Also, there really is no way to tell if the FPD is the only problem until you rip into it. While you are in there replace your o-rings becasue these have a tendancy to leak as well.

I do have a spare FPD and o-rings for the pieces that fit into the end of the rails. I'll probably just do it without isolating the culprit. I was just hoping I didn't have to pull out the rat’s nest. I have removed the rats’ nest on another FD and know it's a pain. I need to have my car up and running for an emissions test this month. If it weren't for that, I would just eliminate the nest altogether since I will be going single in a month or so.

thanks for you patience in answering my questions

Find someone who lives outside of St. Louis county, a relative or a friend of a friend who will let you register your car using there address. Kansas City does not have emissions regulations, neither does Kirksville or Rolla so try there. Good luck.
