For OEM, Mazda says every 60k mi, most ppl do it every 30k mi.

I did mine at 30k mi and didn't notice any difference, which means it wasn't clogged or anything.

If you use a Bosch relocated filter, it needs to be cleaned pretty often as it's a tiny filter.

Do this miserable job once and I guarantee that you will not want to do it very often. Completely insane design for a replaceable part.

How hard is it to change the fuel filter? Any special tools needed or any place where one can get helpful hints?

I have the same job lined up for this weekend. Crawled under the car tonight to take another look. It's pretty comical...can barely see the thing let alone imagine getting a socket on it. But from what I've read once you get the bracket off you will be able to move it to the left and right of the diff to get the hoses off.

I'm afraid I'll get the freakin' thing off and not be able to get the bracket bolts lined up or the hoses back on!!!!

Yeah, I've considered taking it to the dealer for this job, but don't have any confidence they'd do any better than me.

Not inlcuding jacking up & preparation time, I can do mine in 1/2 an hour

Just make sure you have extensions of the right size, and having the adjustable angle thingy is also EXTREMELY helpful. It's not as bad as you think. I actually use 2 extensions that give me the exact amount of room that I need. It takes me longer to remove the hoses from the filter than it does to unbolt the thing.

Don't forget to drain the fuel system.

Can you elaborate/clarify what the "adjustable angle thingy" means. I assuming rachet extension/socket???

I'm considering relocating my filter. It seems like the trouble would pay off!

Two large forceps clamped on the hoses keep you from drinking gas! You can get them at Harbor Freight really cheap. I also like to wrap my arms with terry towels held in place by duct tape, and latex gloves come in handy so it doesn't ruin your nail polish. That's what Flybye told me anyway.

I hope my neighbors never see me doing this.

It's worth it. I relocated my filter more towards the front. I have 2 x 100 micron filters from Earl's in line for both my fuel pumps. I can actually clean/replace both in about 2 minutes.

It's not as hard as everyone seems to make it out to be, but it is worth relocating with a washable/reusable filter.

I just copied your write up and will be doing a "walkthru" of it underneath the car before actually doing anything to make sure I don't screw anything up! (and make sure I have all the right tools first, or I'll end up having the car up on jack stands for a long *** time!).
