Fresh rebuild question SMOKE

I have about 100 miles on a fresh rebuild. All new side seals, side seal springs, apex seals, .....

It does not smoke at initial startup. Only time it smokes is if I free rev it it'll smoke coming off the rev, or if I stop the car, and start it back up after a couple minutes. It's bad enough smoke that I can see it in the rearview mirror.

I had the side housing's lapped. Did I read that the oil control rings take longer to seat on a motor with lapped housings?

How do I verify that it is the turbo oil seal or the oil control rings? I pulled the plugs and they appear to have normal carbon on them.

One theory: I noticed a little bit of turbo compressor damage from the apex seals from the last nuke. Could this cause the turbo to become unbalanced and wipe out the oil seals,(Garrett T04S)?

Just trying to figure it out?

By the way I cannot boost it due to the fresh rebuild, so I am unsure what it will do under boost...

Question

Oil smoke, I presume? Who did the rebuild? Also, check your Intercooler pipes for oil. Put some more miles on it and see if the problem persists.

I've heard on this forum that it's normal for a rebuild to smoke some when it's still real fresh. It's burning off all the grease, lube, what ever the mechanic used when putting in the new parts and seals. This may not be it, but it's a shot in the dark.

totaly agree with Street King. give it more time to break in first. My 90' rebuild from atkins smoked for a while but went away and runs great now. Didn;t smoke too badly though.still puffs a little on start up but only uses normal amount of oil. try keeping an eye on the oil level for a while. Good luck and try not to fear the worst yet!!

I did the rebuild following Bruce Turrentine's video and the shop manual very carefully. I replaced all the seals, and even fresh rotor housings.

Mine is a Pettit with about 4000miles on it & it smokes a tiny bit on startup but if it idles too long it will smoke quite a bit for a few minutes then it will stop, sometimes if im sittin at a red light too long it will start to smoke, haha, I noticed a thread about oil O-rings failing and causing smoke well Ive always known they were going but last night I started to leak oil pretty bad and its coming from the O-rings on the oil feed from the cooler...
Ill post about my smoke issue if it goes away after putting new O-rings in...

Doing a full rebuild in your garage is very ambitious. Good for you . Hopefully the problem clears up with some more mileage on the motor.....
