fog light switch to fan mod

Has anyone out there ever done a fog light switch to fan mod? I'm trying to put one on my R1, but I don't know which wires go where. I understand there is a black wire with a lime green line with a plug on the end by the ECU that goes to the fans. I have a fog light switch with a small and large white wire and a small and large red wire. Does anyone know how these wires are supposed to be hooked up? I would really appreciate the help. Thanks

You don't need the 4 wires. I don't know if you can use that switch or not. I just used a toggle. Take the spare ECU wire (the one you have obviously found) and put a toggle (2 wire, 1 in and 1 out) between it and a ground. Not sure if you can make the fog light switch a toggle or not... but if you can, cool. When you turn on the toggle, you ground the fans. They come on. Do this 2 minutes before shutting off the car, and they stay on for 10 more.

Foglight Switch Used as Fan Mod Switch

Been there done that!

There are four wires on the fog light switch. Two are larger gauge, the white and the red with yellow stripe. Two are smaller gauge, the red with green stripe and the red with blue stripe.

Only the two larger gauge wires are actually switched on and off by the switch. These are the two wires to use for the fan mod. Use one wire to go to ground and the other to where you are wiring into the fan circuit such as the version of the fan mod that goes to the relays. It doesn't matter which you choose.

The two smaller gauge wires are not operated by the switch. These two wires are the hot and ground wires for the amber illuminating diode (bulb) in the switch itself. The illuminating diode glows only when the head lights/panel lights are turned on. This illuminating diode is NOT a light to tell you the switch is in the on/closed position. The red with blue stripe is the hot and the red with green stripe is the ground. You do not have to hook-up these two wires for the fan mod to work. However, if you want the foglight switch (now the fan mod switch) to illuminate with the other panel lights then connect the red with green stripe wire on the foglight switch to the red with green stripe wire on the rear window defroster switch which happens to be close by on the console panel. Do the same with the red with blue stripe wires. Now you will have a fan mod switch that illuminates with all the other panel lights.

One other word of advice. Remember that the black plastic console and the black plastic radio/heater fascia can be scratched very easily. Take precautions to handle them carefully.

Take Care

While we're on this topic again, Is the fan mod switch solely a mod done to manipulate the timing of the fans? I really want to know if there's a mod out there in web land that lets you turn on the fans whenever you want, like even when the car is cold.

Thanks,

Ant

The fan mod they are talking about just makes the fans run for 10min. when the car is turned off. To turn the fans on anytime you want check out this site in the how-to section:

Actually, I used the foglight switch to do the fan mod that allows me to turn on the fans at any time. And, yes I used Dave's how-to site as a reference

The fan mod turns the fans on 2 (two) minutes after the ignition is switched on if the wire is grounded even if the car has not been run at all. For the fans to run ten (10) minutes after the car is shut off the switch has to remain on for aprox 20 to 30 seconds after the ignition switch is turned off. It is a good idea to turn the switch off after turning the ignition off as it acts as a slow drain on the battery if left on all the time. Should you only be away from the car for shot periods of time you don't have to worry about switching it off and the fans will still shut off ten minutes after the ignition is shut off. Generaly the fans run at med speed when the ignition is on and drop to low speed when the ignition is of and the switch is shut of 20 to 30 seconds after the ignition is turned off. Hope this clears up some of the questions.
