flywheel grinding?????

I installed my new ACT street/strip clutch with a 9.5# racing beat aluminum flywheel today. Okay, I did everything that I was suppose to...according to directions that I got from some of you and from the packaging that came with the clutch/flywheel. I go to crank my car and it turns over and then hangs up. Try again and it is just hung up on something. So I raise the car back up, drop the tranny shield and start turning the flywheel. It turns about 3/4 and then hangs up. I took off the starter and the flywheel was grinding on the starter. Now I turn it and it turns easier but now there is aluminum shavings coming out of the starter motor hole! I look as the flywheel goes around and there is only shavings on 1/4 or the flywheel and the rest is clean. Is the flywheel warped or what? I need help bad. I spent over 7 hours working on it with a lift, tranny jack, and air tools. This sucks

If possible, I would ask the Mazda dealership to see if they have a FD flywheel in stock. Then I would drop by and compare that flywheel w/ your flywheel. Sorry ttpowerd, but that is all I can suggest.

That is exactly what I was thinking. It sounds like the flywheel or starter isnt torqued down good enough. There is also that little shim thing that fit in the notch of the flywheel. Did you put that back in?

Yes the 'key' is in (otherwise wouldn't flywheel not spin?) and everything was installed according to how I thought it needed to go on. The recommendations for the clutch to be bolted to the flywheel from racing beat was 14lbs. I thought that was a little low so I torqued it a little more....think that would have anything to do with it?

I believe stock spec is about 25lbs for the clutch bolts and thats what I've used with great success. That however shouldnt affect your flywheel and starter alignment though. I was talking about the main flywheel bolt, the big one. Its supposed to be torqued to hell and back. I cant remember off the top of my head but if you used a 3-4 foot breaker bar and put all you weight into it youd prob have it torqued pretty close to spec lol

The starter is bolted to the trans.....maybe your trans is not torqued correctly all the way around. That would throw off the position of the starter, not by much but it prob doesnt take much to mess it up

Well after I took the starter off it was grinding on the bell housing (or what I think is the bell housing) somewhere above the starter and shavings were coming out of the starter hole. I am going to take it back off and compare it to my stock flywheel to see if it is warped and if not then i will try putting it back on a little farther. (I used an impact wrench but I don't remember the torque)

your tranny isnt bolted properly to your motor!!!! Thats why its grinding...

Or you didnt put some shims back in when you changed flywheels.. either way your tranny has to come out!

I called the mechanic that was helping me and the key had gotten bent! So he ordered a new one, I'll keep you up-to-date though.

You are right on the tranny having to come back out though. Oh well, almost done (maybe)
