Flywheel to clutch bolt hole stripped out, tap it or use larger standard bolt?

Somehow one of the bolts that holds the clutch to the flywheel stripped out. Should I tap it or just toss in a larger standard bolt?

Anyone know what size tap I should use if I go that route?

Thanks....

install a helicoil in the flywheel and use a bolt that matches the other ones otherwise it will be off balance

How well do they work? How do you install them? Do most hardware stores carry them?

Do you know what size that stock bolt is?

20 questions eh

I would have to go to the shop to look at the bolt size/thread pitch. Helicoils are the **** they work great. Just depends on how bad you stripped it if you need one. If you just cross threaded the bolt you can probably just clean up the threaded hole on the flywheel with a tap, but if the bolt hole is completely stripped out you should buy the helicoil kit for the size you need. Probably a 8mmX1.75 not sure . Any oriely/zone/advance/hardware store should stock them. You can bring one of the good bolts with you to be exact. Kit comes with a special tap designed for the helicoil itself. Be sure to use the correct drill bit it asks for on the tap and to drill it straight also put some locktite on the helicoil when installing it. good luck

If you haven't used that kit yet, you might consider just taking the flywheel to a machine shop.

Have them simply weld the hole closed, ground the weld flush on both sides, then retap the hole.

Good as new, and stronger then using a helicoil.

it's an alluminum flywheel, I don't trust any of the local welders around here. Not for alluminum.

tap it the next size up. its probable easier to go to home depot with the bolt and get an american bolt and tap that is rouphly the same size (girth aprox.)as the original and tap it.

Hellicoils work really well. I used them a couple times before in my life.

DO NOT DO THIS!!! You will ruin your flywheel not to mention that you would have to drill your pressure palte to match the larger bolt size!

Got it fixed, I left the pressure plate on while it fixed it. I just drilled out the hole with a 21/64 bit. Tapped it and installed a 1.75 helicoil and it's running good now. I used my ACT 6 puck disk with my buddies no name blue upgraded pressure plate.

Thanks for the help

Cool.

I've got a helicoil in my exhaust manifold, it has been there since 2001 and I replaced the engine in 2004 and had no problems with removing the stud.

I now have 3 Helicoils in my exhaust manifold and one in a downpipe stud which I found stripped on my newly purchased used turbos; no problems. A Helicoil is a permanent repair. As long as it's drilled and tapped correctly there are no problems.

My used turbos had four brand new downpipe studs in them and that just struck me as odd. I removed them and found one of the holes stripped. Lucky enough it's the same size as the manifold bolts so I popped a Helicoil in there too. New studs don't help if the threads are gone from the hole...

Drove it around today and all seems fine. The rigged and jimmied clutch that I threw together feels different. It engages farther off the floor than my previous clutch. It will just take some getting used to

Glad it worked out for you!!

did you put locktite on the helicoil when you installed it? If not its no big deal. It might unscrew with the bolt next time you take it out.
