Finally installed 99-spec lip!! How I did it without drilling!
 

How I did it:

1. Removed all plastic tabs and locating pins on the SIDES of the 99 lip, after the brake ducts, using a sharp blade. The front ones fit the 93-95 bumper just fine.

2. Removed stock lip

3. Attached 2 side bolts for each half lip first and worked my way to the front, this made my life easier

4. Tightened everything up, note that I DID NOT drill any extra holes

5. I zip-tied the right and left side undertrays in the front as there's no place to bolt them in the 99 lip. The sides were bolted using stock locations

Fit is not perfect, I'm debating whether to drill one extra hole on each side to make it fit better. I like how it looks though

I'm trying to think of another sports car with a cheesy piece of plastic hanging off the front bumper that basically does absolutely nothing unless you are going 120 (and questionable what value it has even then)

I never understood modifications that do not improve performance....it's why I always shake my head at ricers

99 front lips rock, I dont know what your talking about. Put one on your car and you will understand.

For some, it improves aesthetics. Personally, I don't care for the '99 lip; I prefer the R1/R2 lip on the '93-'95 cars. IMO, it *belongs* on the car, compared to the stock Touring/Base lip.

it looks dumb to me.....and I see it as offering no real performance advantage whatsover....as I said, perhaps minor increase in downforce at 120+

So MAZDA is a ricer company for making and installing these OEM parts on their cars in japan?

Yep, its not required to drill any holes at all... its just reccomended for a better fit. Even if you drill holes, it will still fit shitty, its just because the profile of the 99-spec and the stock 93-98 bumpers is slightly different.

I guess Im a ricer, according to FD from R1...

I dont know what these people are talking about, the 99 spec lip is beautiful. I dont see how anyone can think it looks ricey.

Actually, I noticed more stability even at highway speeds. It's definitely functional.

Interesting. Is that for the 99 or the stock lip? or are both functional?

I don't know about the stock R1 lip, but I'm referring to the '99 Spec Lip.

In that case I better take the black tint off my car because I'm a ricer now.


I think its a better improvement over the shitty 1" lip that most come with. But I have to agree I think the R1 and R2, lip looks more agressive because they are a beefier lip. On top of that both were not only designed for more agressive appearance, but to direct more cold air into the radiator and intercooler even below 120mph, on top of the added benefit of downforce.

it's their car let them do whatever they want to it, keep t stock, riced it out, it's their money.

I installed a 93 r1 lip on my base model yesterday and could have sworn I felt more stability on the highway, it just felt like the front was heavier and stuck to the ground more than it did driving it earlier that day with the 1" stock lip. My real goal was to increase stability over 120mph though since I'm taking it to the track on Friday. I've heard that sevens are weird over 120 due to front-end lift, so whatever downforce I can get up front is welcome.

Plus it looks much better than the stock base lip and not ricey at all. I'm not convinced on the 99+ lip though especially if it doesn't fit perfectly.

With a just a bit of attention to the alignment, the only part that doesnt mate almost perfectly is the ends, which are about 1 cm longer (towards the tires).

Do not improve performance? Well, FYI, the stock R1 vs the stock Touring lip cut the front lift IN HALF according to wind tunnel testing.

Yeah it doesn't matter at 50 mph, but when I'm going 150, I sure love the planted feel!

I have the stock lip, and have have had my car over 130 mph on several occasions. It has always felt very solid.

My preference would be to have the R1 lip. To me, it looks better with the 93-95 bumper. My only concerns are scraping it on curbs, and getting the car on my ramps when I work on it. I suspect that the downforce is similar with both.

I'm curious.. honestly what do you have on your car?? Maybe we all need to learn a lesson or two on "not" ricin' out our cars.. And OEM mazda piece is being "ricer".. Geez, what next, 99 rear spoiler is also ricing out??

First of all, most of us when we see a riced out car, we immediately think its slow.. So, why not rice it out and make it go fast?? that would be something.. hmm..
