Finally dyno tuning my FD with Steve Kan

Well, after a most frusterating year of headaches with my car (read this AEM...your ignition systems are horrible!), Steve Kan has finally put things together and we are on the dyno.

First pulls at 14psi today put down 394rwhp. I hope to see 420 or so by 17psi.

There are a couple issues that have come up...one is some smoke from the turbo which we are running a catch can and using vacuum to allow proper crank case ventillation, and the other is some ignition break up happening at high boost and past 14psi/7000rpms.

The ignition problem should hopefully be fixed tomorrow (now running msd after four failed AEM ignition boxes).

Anyhow....I should have sheets in a couple days and will post.

Why didn't you try the hks twin power?

I actually went there to pick up the twin power...but at the time AEM rumors and hype were flying around so I went with that. bad move on my part... The MSD was easiest for me to acquire and was proven so I went with it. It has new coils and a new amp so it should get worked out this time. If not, I am just going to throw down and get the HKS.

Sounds good. Is Steve tuning for the water injection or are you just using it for safety?

If you're lucky you'll hit 420 around 16lbs once you take care of the ignition problems. Nice numbers

water inj is for safety....tuning is being done around 10.8:1 since my car is coming to sf where it is a bit cooler in temp and also sea level.

I had hoped for 430 to the wheels at 17psi originally....anything close will be just fine. Realistically I see it finishing up around 410-420rwhp. we shall see.

I will ask steve about the oil feed...I know there have been some different solutions attempted to keep the turbo from smoking.

It is -4AN feed with .070" restrictor. The return line is a -12AN.

smoking prob sounds solved...just some at start up and a teeny bit at idle....not bad for no cats and boatloads of mods.

420rwhp will make me a very happy man. god willing we will get there.

hopefully will see dyno sheets today...will post as soon as they come through.

turbo was built by bryan at bnr who has been very patient and helpful while we get all the bugs worked out.

wont get back on the dyno til tuesday. ignition breakup may still be a problem. dyno is booked until then. due to breakup the peak rwhp was limited to 399 at 16psi....damn gremlins...how i hate them.

almost done though...should hit at least 415 I think.

What plugs are you running? I had problems with the stock style NGK's when I approached 400rwhp. I now run NGK 10egv's and an HKS twin power. In addition I switched to a constant 18 degree's of split.

After you fix the ignition problems you will need to fix the traction issues.

What caused the smoking problem?

As of Feb 23rd- current dyno numbers: 412rwhp at 16psi

ignition breakup is fixed (new plugs and wires)...however there is a problem with the coils. Trailing not firing properly.

the coils are new...so double checking everything. Will do a final round of dyno pulls when I pick up the vehicle. Will post sheets shortly.
