fiberglass ducting project for track car - ongoing

Here are pics of my first attemp at using fiberglass to make some ducts for my track car. I used 'chicken-wire' to make a mold then 'fiberglassed' right over the wiremesh, it was a mess and ugly first attempt, but fun to do and I saw the potential in making some really nice and smoth duct work....even though this first one did not come out very smooth (hehehe)

This first duct is to to hold a tube that is fed from the nose to the side of the air filter area.

This is the wiremesh molded into position.

This is the wiremesh with its first coat of resin and fiberglass.

This is the duct after another resin/fiberglass layer and painted black.

This is the duct in position. IT hold the tubing very well and although did not come out as smooth as I want it looks pretty good and blocks off that side area well.

The next duct I will try to make is the one that feeds from the nose up into the slot space between the radiator and the carbody, right below the air filter.

Nice work! I like the idea alot!!!! I am or should say was trying to think of how to duct into my single's air filter as well. As far as the finish...it doesn't look that bad. Could be worse. Anyway , you could smooth it with some filler and then paint to mach the car. Any shots of the other side of the duct.( from the inner fender or front of the car?) Did you just use some flex/heater hose for the air tract? Aloha,Dave

you gotta get a sander and sand that bad boy down, then just warp it with a nice coat of cf and youll be done where is the duct btw? is it at the frame rail? why not run a pipe right down to where the second oilcooler/transcooler is and put a filter on that, the pipe would go next to the radiaort and up straight to the turbos/turbo, its pretty easy to do and i got it on my car.

>>where is the duct btw?

I'll post more comprehensive pics as i get it done.

though of that, i have a 2nd oil cooler there so no space, instead I will pull from that space and pull from the space between the radiator....

pics to come when i get it done...

thanks dave, yeah, the metal tubing is just some hefty heater hose, it may be better to use some rubber hose witha wire helix in it, but this was already in there so I'm just going to use it.

I'll have pics of the entire setup as I get it finished.

Damian,
Something that helped me a lot when making boxes/ducts in the past was instead of first using the cloth on chicken wire I stretched panty hose over the wire. I found it easier to use and easier to get a first smoother coat of the resin. Just something to consider. Looks good though.

Hey good job Damian
The chicken wire is a good idea I wish I would have thought of that when I was making formwork.
Here is a pic of the ducting I am working on.

Damian,
Yeah I like the panty hose. It's more absorbant but doesn't get all stringy like the cloth. Plus it doesn't show it's weave as badly, but not bad at all for your first go.
