a few questions... Please help

OK, i have posted this before but havent really gotten any clear answer. I tried searching to no avail.

I recently bought my car and i am now realizing some of its problems. I did i expect problems when i bought it so now i just need to fix them. My tranny has been making some weird noises but the main problem that i have found is that it makes a weird grinding sound but only under times of high g force I think. Such as...Full acceleration in first gear(sometimes second), accelerating hard while turning usually in first or second gear. It is a grinding sound with a strong vibration coming from right under the center console. What do you think it could be?

My second question is: Is buying a new downpipe that much better than a gutted precat. I just got my car and it came with the gutted precat, Do you think its worth another 300 to get a 3" SS downpipe?

Third: Is redline gear oil going to be worth the trouble over getting just a motor oil you can find in the autoparts store such as mobil 1 gear oil?

Last: Is the OEM mazda fuel filter going to be any better than the purolater one (or any autparts store one) considering the it costs like 3 times as much?

Thanks a lot for your help.

I'll help you with the DP question. A gutted precat has most of the qualities you need in a dwonpipe. A real downpipe will probably flow better and also weighs a lot less. It just depends on what you want to spend your money on.

1. I have not done any troubleshooting on tranny problems yet, so hopefully someone can help you on that.

2. I would recommend a downpipe still. That way you'll know the precat is gone completely.

3. Most people have really good things to say about Redline products. If you are going to change it, I would recommend Redline.

4. There are people that use Purolater oil filters, however, becareful which one you pick:

You should be able to get Mazda OEM oil filters from the dealer pretty cheap if you order them in bulk (I usually just order 10 of them).

Hope some of that helps...

1) Might want to check out the syncros. I am not sure, typically I hear about 5th gear syncro going first but sounds about the same.
2) I agree with rated r1
3) I don't have much experience here but I hear that redline is the best out there
4) I use mobil 1 and I think it is great!

I think he asked about the FUEL filter, and its a PIA to change, since you should change it every 15,000 miles...must be some dirty stuff going through there...get the Mazda one. Not the car to do thigs the cheap way...unless you're converting your tail lights to '99 spec, hehehe, or you can spend the $500.

yeah i guess i will just take it to mazda for the fuel filter. How much do you think they will charge on labor for that? I know their fuel filter costs $47.

Where can i buy redline anyway? I have looked at pepboys, kragen, autozone, ect...

I guess i will get a new downpipe, but I think i will just wait until i have a new catback.

Anyone else have any more info on the tranny considering that is my biggest problem. It seems to do it when the car is leaning(leaning back during acceleration, or to the side while turning). Its really weird. What do you think. Thanks everyone for your help.

hahah...I did the same thing.

For the fuel filter, go with the mazda OEM one. They seem to work pretty good. It is not as hard as everyone says to change the filter. Do a search under my screen name and "fuel filter" as the key words. you should find more than enough info on how to do it. Takes about 30 min the first time and after that it is a 15 - 20 minute job.

You might want to take your car in for the tranny issue. Most trannys are the same so this is one of the few times I condone using a mazda dealer. They will probably be able to diagnose your problem pretty quickly.

ok, i have now changed my mind again.. i do that a lot. I decided to do the fuel filter myself and use the oem one. I also decided to either use mobil 1 or use neo in the tranny/diff and do that myself. And wait for the downpipe until i get a new catback(my stock one has a hole in it).

I really just need more info on the tranny. I guess i will just take it in to mazda to get it checked out if the new tranny oil doesnt do anything and if i cant get any answers on here. Has anyone on this forum had similar problems to mine?? or am i the first person ever to have these problems??
