Question FD3S Gauge Cluster Problem - Video Inside

Hey guys,

Bought an FD a few months ago and since I got the car, it's had a problem with a non-working odometer, twitchy tach and a speedo gone haywire (but generally mimics tach movement). See video below:

The RPM readings on my PFC seem fine, with no "twitch" in the reading, so I am ruling out problems related to the speed sensor on the trans (would affect speedo) or the signal from the coils (would affect tach).

I've been doing a lot of reading, and realize there are a number of possible causes/solutions:

- Bad capacitors on the circuit boards (Source)
- Bad ground, signal or 12V connection problem between clip and cluster (Source)
- Cold solder joints on the circuit boards (Source, Source 2, Instructions)

Any experts that can weigh in to let me know what they think is the most likely cause before I start opening up the cluster?

PS - For anyone looking for instructions on how to open up the cluster, here is a great one (Link)

Thanks

My best advice is to remove the cluster, open it, remove the speedo board, then visually inspect the board for swelled/leaked caps, burned solder runs, and the like found on the threads in this forum.

Look for the DIY How-to Troubleshooting thread for a wealth of info.

Take lots of photos and post in the appropriate threads, please.

Cheers,
George
