Why not just use a factory style muffler? I guarantee "all the one's that you've driven" weren't stock exhaust, because stock they don't sound anything like a chainsaw. Find one that hasn't been modified and ask the owner for a ride. If you're not happy with that, buy something with a V8, whether it be a converted RX7 or something else.
If you don't want your FD to sound like a chainsaw on crack or a powerboat, then keep a cat in the exhaust system and run a true muffler exhaust as some have mentioned above. Avoid cannister-style exhausts.
All that said, the exhaust note of a pre-renesis rotary is not a clear focused tone like with other engines -- it is a higher-pitched sound, it's never going to sound like a V8.

Like many others have said, an rx-7 with a downpipe, stock-cat, and a racing-beat dual has a nice pleasing performance sound. It doesn't sound anything like the annoying chainsaw-buzz you've heard before. One step further and you can put on the stock exhaust and pre-cats, then you'll barely be able to hear anything except the V8 behind you...

I had a HUGE exhaust leak DP-CAT, the bolts were so loose there was a 1/4 inch gap between the pipes. It made the loudest, craziest sound. It kinda was the thrub-thrub-thrub sound of a v8, but louder and higher pitched. I had to drive 20 miles home to fix it. I'm lucky I didn't get pulled over by the couple of cops I passed, who gave me some strange looks.

Anyone else think that the primary spools faster with the stock exhaust? At least it feels that way on my car. Perhaps the stock exhaust is restrictive enough to cause more of the exhaust gases to spool the turbos?
