What is the reliable torque limit of the stock 5 speed?

In the UK, a few of the RX-7 drag cars that run 9s and 10s use the RX-8 6 speed because it is supposed to be stronger than the FD 5 speed. I assume a FD running 9s is making between 550-650 hp depending on the weight of the car and the rest of the setup since the FD itself is already so light. Please correct me if I am wrong though.

The cars that run 8s over here are usually switched to a Lenco or similar drag racing transmission.
...most of what you are asking for is stated on page 1, Post #1. Ever thought about trying to search first or simply reading the thread, buddy?

you will need to buy a short clutch master cylinder. .75 piston. Willwood, Tilton AP take your pick. about $100. recalled that it bolted right up no problems.

Remove the FD slave cylinder and use the bearing release shown on page #1.

Not sure If i missed it, but whats the total weight difference? I really want to go this route for transmission but I really don't want to mess up the weight balance. Im sure I will probably never push the car hard enough for it to matter, but it would be nice to know.

It is heavier than stock FD trans but maybe 20 lbs. A 0.7% increase in weight near the middle of the car....... Unless you are a race car driver, you'll never know. The performance from the close ratio gearing far outweighs (no pun intended) the added weight.

The T56 and T56 Magnum like 7/8" bore master cylinders. You can run one from Tilton, USBrake, Wilwood etc. The clutch line needed is the McLeod 30" braided steel s/s quick disconnect line. I sell all this stuff.

As far as shifting smoothness... IMO it goes like this from average to smoothest
T56 '93-02 Fbody
T56 '04-06 GTO (has triple synchros so it shifts a little better)
FD 5spd shifts a little smoother
T56 Magnum (once broken in properly 1-2K miles it is silly smooth and really does warrant the extra cost)

I'm pushing around 1400hp thru a 100% T56 Magnum in my 88mm Turbo LS9 RX-7 without issues. 22psi in 5th gear ..... it makes 1060rwhp/1070rwtq on 14psi.... I can only guess what 22psi makes... but the turbo is rated at a little over 1400hp flywhweel.
different view

The T56 Magnum shares no internals with the '93-06 transmission. The case has more webbing designed in the casting and weighs 3-4lbs more. The steel itself used in the gears/shafts is a better grade than the older ones. The output shaft is 31 spline vs. 27 of the '93-06 units. It is well built.... There are a couple Supras running them and shifting close to 10,000rpm without issues running a lightweight race style clutch/flywheel. I shift mine around 7800rpm with a 50lb twin disc McLeod 1200hp RXT clutch/steel SFI 30lb flywheel. The T56 Magnum is approx 135lbs without bellhousing. It is easily 50lbs more than the FD 5spd.
