FD tranny Q

Ever since i got my FD (back in Oct 05) it's always had this whining noise coming from the transmission. i've never had any transmission issues it's just really annoying b/c it makes the noise in all gears except 4th. Would a rebuild get rid of this noise or should i just live with it?

There's usually not a dipstick on a manual tranny...how long have you owned it? (Mileage wise)

change the fluid and put a lil lucas in there or marvel mystery oil. helps with making the fluid climb the gears better

It's probably a badly worn needle bearing between the input and mainshafts. That bearing is always rotating except when you're in 4th gear. To replace it you'll need to tear down the tranny completely, and since it's badly worn it will probably require a new input and mainshaft too. Changing oil will not really help anything, except to give you an idea how much metal has worn off internally.

All in all, it's not critical to fix, but I'd budget for a new(er) tranny as a replacement. It might be rebuildable, but the cost will likely exceed a replacement by a bunch.

that's good to know, i'd rather just buy a replacement and pop and swap than forking up the cash for a rebuild.

replacements are def cheaper than rebuilding but i'll do that when i know i'm going to run into a problem, my car just sounds like a jet right now----
