hey folks, have not been on here in a while but i still have both my fd's and currently have them in a shop at the local racetrack. looking to add tow hooks to both the front and back. looking for recommendations and suggestions on the best brands, shapes and locations etc.
there seem to be a lot more options out there since 2011 when i first was gonna add them.
what are you guys running? any tips, things to look out for? please post pics. thanks in advance
FWIW years ago I had to cut and re-weld what was suppose to be a custom-fit front hoop from Rennmetal to get it to fit. It was way off. While it probably wouldn’t have been an issue, I also extended the mounting flange so it could mount with two bolts to the chassis instead of just one. I remember being pretty disappointed, I thought they had a decent reputation
Garage alpha, bubble tech, a few others all offer them. Big differences are material and design based around what front bumper you're using. I tried to buy some from Garage alpha and got ghosted for a few months before finally getting a refund. They're way behind on orders and communication with customers. All I can say is if you need them call before you order and make sure there isn't a 6 month lead time because it won't be communicated to you. At least bubbletech just lists them as out of stock. I'm still looking to buy them, just can't find any in stock.

Re: Rennmetal, It was the stock S6 (R1) bumper. I’ve never really compared it to others but they DID use good heavy stock. Probably overkill for what I wanted...just a place to pull the car onto a trailer if needed. I think they’re still big in the Miata community.

Do you have both front and rear? I got a bunch of new never used parts when I acquire the R1, one of them is the Rennenmetal tow hook set, debating if I want to install them on the BB.
Yes, both front and rear currently. Of course you need the stock tie-down bracket for the rear. I painted that bracket to match the red hoop and used stainless hardware but personally never was really in love with the look at the rear.
Don’t mind the look at the front once I got it to fit. And maybe that issue was just a fluke. The front will be easy to test fit. Like I mentioned, just one bolt to mount it in the available threaded hole at chassis “frame horn”, even though a second is just a couple inches away.
Do you have any picture you can share? Unfortunately for me the front bumper has to come off, I have some mesh screen covering the bumper opening to block debris from the radiator, and to get the screen off I have to remove the bumper. And for the rear, I have to remove the RE diffuser, so not straight forward for neither of them haha.
Most of the all-metal tow hooks are front bumper cover specific. A lot of newer outfits are making the seatbelt webbing type, which (I would imagine) be a more universal fit.
For a front tow hook, I love the Garage Alpha piece (https://garagealpha.com/collections/...tow-hook-front). Only issue for me is even though it fits my OEM '99 bumper, I have R Magic oil cooler ducts which block the opening. :/
Nice day, ran some errands and stopped at my shop. Can’t remember for sure but I think I used the smaller “touring” bumper flanges that are usually paired with fog lights. But I think it would still work with the R versions. FWIW...
